Academic and student recognised at 2024 South African Women in Science Awards

North-West University (NWU) academic Prof Olubukola Oluranti Babalola and PhD student Sinenhlanhla Mthembu were recognised at the 2024 South African Women in Science Awards (SAWiSA) on 15 August in Mbombela. 

Prof Babalola was named the first runner-up in the Distinguished Women Research category, while Sinenhlanhla won the DSI Esther Mahlangu Doctoral Fellowship award. 

Prof Babalola, director of NWU’s Food Security and Safety research niche area and leader of the Microbial Biotechnology subject group, expressed her appreciation for the recognition.  

“Being selected as the first runner-up is truly humbling. I am grateful for being chosen and the opportunities it brings," she said. She also acknowledged the support that contributed to her success. "This SAWiSA award is a testament to the financial support from the National Research Foundation, the institutional support from the NWU, the dedication of my students, and the investment from my academic and career mentors. I thank SAWiSA for recognising our collective efforts." 

Sinenhlanhla, a PhD student in biochemistry, collaborates with the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC).  

Reflecting on her award, Sinenhlanhla said, “What a wonderful way to commemorate Women's Month! I'm deeply thankful to Department of Science and Innovation for acknowledging our dedication as young researchers. This recognition fuels our passion to share our knowledge and empower others. A special tribute to Dr Esther Mahlangu, whose remarkable legacy inspires women globally. I'm also grateful to the NWU and SAMRC for their unwavering support, which has been instrumental in our success.”

The SAWiSA awards recognise the contributions of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Hosted by the Department of Science and Innovation, this year’s theme was "Transition towards an Innovation Economy: The Role of Women Leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics".
