North-West University (NWU) academic Prof Gilbert Motsaathebe and alumnus Dr Monicca Thulisile Bhuda have been selected as part of South Africa's team for the 20th International Book Fair of Venezuela (FILVEN) in Caracas, from 11 to 21 July 2024. South Africa will be the guest of honour at this event.
The Ministry of Popular Power for Culture, through the National Book Centre (CENAL), invited South Africa via the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture. This international book fair is considered Venezuela's largest cultural event, spotlighting the work of national and international authors, publishers and readers.
A delegation of South African authors, poets, and literary figures will participate on the FILVEN main stage in discussions, seminars, interviews, and lectures. Their involvement aims to showcase the country's literary achievements and engage with a global audience about the transformative power of literature.
The South African team’s participation in the fair will be themed "30 Footprints of Freedom: South Africa’s Literary Strides Towards Democracy and Beyond". This theme underscores the nation's literary journey from segregation and oppression to democracy and unity.
The theme explores how literature has served as a mirror, catalyst and advocate for change. It highlights the various literary footprints that have contributed to South Africa's pursuit of freedom, justice, and the celebration of diverse cultural identities. These footprints encompass a wide range of themes, reflecting the nation's rich history, struggles and aspirations.
