5-Aside Fridays to reignite football culture at the Mahikeng Campus

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus is set to reignite its vibrant football culture with the launch of the 5-Aside Fridays programme, a nine-week inter-residence football tournament aimed at promoting student wellness, residence pride, talent identification and campus vibrancy.

Organised by the Mahikeng Campus Sports department in partnership with the All Sports Chapter, the tournament will run from 7 August to 2 October 2026, with matches taking place every Friday at the Great Hall.

The programme will bring together 16 teams comprising students and staff in an exciting competition designed to strengthen unity and foster healthy competition across the campus community.

According to Dylan Chibira, sports officer and organiser of the tournament, the initiative was introduced in response to overwhelming calls from students who wanted football activities to continue on campus following the absence of the university from the Varsity Football competition this year.

“Football has always been part of the identity and culture of the Mahikeng Campus. Every second semester, students look forward to football activities that bring residences and the campus community together. Although the NWU Football Club was not part of Varsity Football this year, the passion and support from our students remained as strong as ever. 5-Aside Fridays is our response to that enthusiasm and our commitment to ensuring that football continues to unite and energise our campus,” says Dylan.

He added that the programme is about much more than competition.

“We want students to remain active, healthy and engaged while creating an environment in which friendships are built, residence pride is strengthened and talented players are identified for future opportunities. This tournament celebrates football while reinforcing the values of teamwork, discipline and excellence that define the NWU.”

The tournament has been carefully structured into three progressive phases.

During Phase 1, known as Block Battles, residences will compete internally over six weeks to determine their representative teams.

The winning teams will then advance to Phase 2, the Division Showdown, in which residence champions from the campus divisions will battle for supremacy over two weeks.

The tournament will culminate in the Championship Final during the ninth week, when the best teams will compete to be crowned the overall 5-Aside Fridays champions.

The participating residences have been grouped into four divisions:

  • East Division: The Cluster Showdown - Khayalethu, Lethabong and Sol Plaatjie

  • Central Division: The Central Park Derby - Mandela 2, James and Kgosi Dick

  • West Division: West Side Pride - Lost City, Biko and Khayelitsha

  • South Division: Three off-campus teams with the highest inter-residence points

The programme forms part of the ongoing commitment of the NWU to creating a holistic student experience in which sport complements academic success and contributes to student well-being.

Beyond the excitement of weekly football matches, the initiative seeks to encourage healthy lifestyles, strengthen the sense of belonging among students and create opportunities for leadership, teamwork and social interaction.

Another important objective is talent identification. The tournament will provide the football structures of the university with an opportunity to identify emerging players who may progress to higher levels of competition, including future inter-residence teams and the NWU Football Club development structures.

The tournament also seeks to reinforce the core values of the university of excellence, integrity, accountability, innovation and inclusivity through sport.

To ensure the successful delivery of the programme, the Sports department will work closely with several internal and external stakeholders, including Student Life, the Soccer Institute management, house parents, house committees, the Student Campus Council, the Student Representative Council, Protection Services, MI7, NWU FM, sponsors and community partners.

Health and safety remain a priority throughout the tournament. Security personnel, emergency medical services, referees, volunteers and first-aid teams will be available on match days, while facilities will be prepared in accordance with the safety and event management protocols of the university.

The organisers expect the programme to strengthen residence identity, improve students' mental and physical well-being and further enhance the vibrant campus experience for which the Mahikeng Campus is renowned.

As students prepare to take to the court every Friday, the tournament is expected to become one of the highlights of the sporting calendar of the university, while reinforcing football as a powerful platform for unity, wellness and student development.

Members of the NWU community are encouraged to attend the matches and support their residences as they compete for campus bragging rights and the coveted 5-Aside Fridays Championship title.
