Watch your step: Student pedometer challenge!

The two-week challenge to be more active is on, and with spring only a few weeks away, all members of the North-West University’s (NWU) campus community in Vanderbijlpark are ready to take part in the Student Pedometer Challenge.

The competition, hosted by the School of Management Sciences, will run from 12 to 25 August 2019 and students can take part in teams of three. Up for grabs are not only ultimate bragging rights but also various exciting prizes.

According to Dr Chantel Muller, lecturer in marketing management and organiser of the event, the aim of the competition is to motivate students to get more active and – equipped with a pedometer or activity tracker – count their steps to better health.

“Walking is the best exercise to keep you healthy and assist you with mental and cognitive functioning,” says Dr Muller, and adds that the competition will also assist in building comradery amongst team members.

How to enter

Create teams of three members and elect a team captain, who will complete the online registration form. Teams will then walk or run as many steps as possible during the two-week challenge, using an activity tracker or a pedometer application on their smartphones.

At the end of each week, the team captain will use a link to capture his/her team’s progress.

For more information, please send an email to Dr Muller at 23488042@nwu.ac.za or visit her office in Building 3.
