Howzat! Friendship and fun the KFC mini-cricket way

A crowd of little tykes sporting cricket bats, pads and wickets will shortly descend on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Vanderbijlpark to showcase their mini-cricket skills.

On Saturday, 14 September, more than 590 little ones – representing 19 schools from across the Southern Gauteng region – will join in the fun of this annual event. This year sees the campus hosting the event for the sixth time.

The festival is organised by the subject group Sport Management in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, KFC and Cricket South Africa.

The 2019 rendition is furthermore sponsored by Colefax Trading (Pty) Ltd – a franchisee of the KFC Corporation, KFC Vanderbijlpark SW5, KFC Vanderbijlpark CBD, KFC Vaal Mall, KFC Three Rivers, KFC Vereeniging 1 and KFC Arcon Park.

According to Fanie Roos, one of the organisers of the festival and a lecturer in the School of Management Sciences at the NWU, the aim of the event is to offer children the opportunity to get active and have fun while, in the process, learning the disciplines of cricket.

“The day is not only about winning or losing,” explains Fanie. He adds that it is about having fun while practicing batting and bowling skills, developing self-confidence and getting the physical exercise that kids of this age need so much. All while having fun with their new-found friends on the pitch.
