Faculty of Education serves up a warm food hug

Winter is here, and as the mercury drops we find ourselves seeking out the comfort of knitted scarves, jackets and snug blankets. And when it comes to the ideal winter foods, a cup of hot soup or a hearty curry are welcomed and appreciated by all.

With this in mind, the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Faculty of Education in Vanderbijlpark recently launched an exam winter meal outreach project on campus.

The project – a collaboration between staff members and representatives of the faculty’s student council – aims to provide students who are preparing for their exams with a wholesome meal to fend off the cold.

According to Dr Elize Kung, deputy dean of the faculty, the project has been received very well and hundreds of students have benefitted from the outreach thus far.

“Apart from providing the students with a nutritious meal to improve their energy levels and assist them to learn better, we believe that the gesture also represents a mental hug in a cup,” explains Dr Kung. “A warm meal is wholesome, comforting and nurturing.”

She also says that as a university, all staff members and student leadership structures adhere to an ethic of care and as such pro-actively identify interventions that will benefit the university community. In this case, this is the student populace of the campus in Vanderbijlpark.

* The Faculty of Education would like to thank Pick ‘n Pay South East Boulevard and President Hyper in Vanderbijlpark for their generous support in realising this project.

While staff members of the Faculty of Education prepared the soup, representatives of the faculty’s student council served the students.
