Webinar urges researchers to unlock the value of their inventions

An invention may begin in a laboratory or research project, but its journey towards impact can be compromised if it is not disclosed early enough to allow appropriate intellectual property assessment and protection. 

This was the message from Teresiah Malatji, senior manager for intellectual property and contracts at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Technology Transfer and Innovation Support (TTIS) office, who hosted a Women in Innovation webinar.

NWU and LIASA call on librarians to lead ethical AI revolution

The North-West University (NWU) Library and Information Service, in partnership with the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA), has challenged librarians to move beyond traditional information management and become leaders in ethical artificial intelligence (AI), digital inclusion and smart library innovation.

The call was made during the South African Librarians' Day celebration held at the NWU’s Vanderbijlpark Campus under the theme, "Librarians: champions of ethical and inclusive AI".

As the demand for safer and more sustainable farming continues to grow, scientists and industry leaders are working together to find better ways to protect crops, support farmers and care for the environment. A new partnership between North-West University and Blum Biologicals aims to do exactly that.

Career fairs connect NWU students with industry across three campuses

The North-West University (NWU) connected thousands of students with employers during a series of career fairs across its Mahikeng, Potchefstroom and Vanderbijlpark campuses in May 2026.

Organised by the Career Services and Alumni Relations office, the fairs gave students direct access to employers, career guidance and valuable networking opportunities. Students explored internships, vacation work, graduate programmes and employment opportunities while gaining first-hand insight into workplace expectations.

Director of Language Directorate appointed CEO of PanSALB

The director of Language Directorate at the North-West University (NWU) has been appointed as chief executive officer (CEO) of the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB), placing one of the language scholars of the university at the centre of South Africa’s efforts to advance multilingualism and indigenous language development.

Nanostar technology at the NWU brings hope for early disease detection

At the North-West University (NWU), research is more than publishing, it is about transforming lives. This is the vision driving a team at the Centre for Human Metabolomics (CHM), where scientists developed a nanostar-based reagent that could revolutionise how rare diseases such as galactosemia are detected. The reagent promises significant advantages over conventional spherical gold nanoparticles, and demonstrates high sensitivity detection in biosensors, colorimetric assays, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and molecular diagnostics.

TTIS showcases NWU innovation at inaugural South Africa Innovation Week

The North-West University (NWU), through its Technology Transfer and Innovation Support (TTIS) office, showcased its growing innovation impact at the inaugural South Africa Innovation Week (SAIW), held from 16 to 20 March 2026 at the NASREC Expo Centre in Johannesburg.

Organised through a partnership between the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) and the South African Innovation Summit (SAIS), the event brought together the government, industry leaders, investors and innovators to advance collaboration and drive South Africa’s innovation agenda.
