International recognition for campus registrar

There is surely no better way to celebrate a memorable career – spanning more than three decades, than by being internationally honoured for your professional impact.

For Mr Neels Vermeulen, acting campus registrar of the Vanderbijlpark Campus of the North-West University (NWU Vaal), this is exactly how he beckoned in his 30th year of service at the university: by being awarded the prestigious Africa Leadership Award for Outstanding Contribution to Education. He received the award in Le Meridien, Mauritius during December.

With more than 34 countries taking part in the award ceremony, the competition was of a very high standard and Education Leadership Awards were presented to a number of institutions: University of Mauritius, American International University: West Africa, Addis Ababa University, Al Zaiem Al Azhari University, Catholic University of Zimbabwe, Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Afe Babalola University, University of Modern Sciences: Dubai, University of Nigeria, University of Technology, Abou Bekr Belkaid University, Rushmore Business School, Whitefield Business School, Open University of Mauritius , Great Zimbabwe University, Coimbatore Institute of Technology and the Walter Sisulu University.

The highlight of this category was the presentation of the six awards for Outstanding Contribution to Education. The winners were:

  • CW Vermeulen, North-West University: Vanderbijlpark Campus
  • Prof Negussie Retta, Addis Ababa University
  • Jevwegaga Helen, Covenant University
  • Lizo Mazwai, Walter Sisulu University
  • Dr Manta Devi Nowbuth, University of Mauritius
  • Khurram Masook, ALU College

The awards were made by Dr Juliette Biao Koudenoukpo, a director and regional representative of the United Nations.

Africa Leadership Awards are annually awarded to senior business leaders, achievers and top educational institutes from across the African continent.
