Young scientist flies NWU flag high in the USA

At just 24, Anneke Schoeman is already an accomplished and gifted young scientist. Anneke is a Phd student in Environmental at the North West University’s Potchefstroom Campus.

She attended the 94th Annual meeting of the American Society of Parasitologists symposium which took place from the 11th till the 14th July 2019 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota.

The American Society of Parasitologists was founded in 1924 and it comprises a diverse group of about 700 scientists who are involved in the study and teaching of the scientific discipline of parasitology.

Anneke’s presentation was titled “Evidence for incipient co-speciation Protopolystoma xenopodis (Monogenea: Polystomatidae) is tracking the divergence of its host, Xenopus laevis (Anura: Pipidae)” and her supervisor was Professor Louis Du Preez.

In 2018 while still pursuing her Master’s degree, Anneke represented the North West University in the UK and was selected as the North West University-Abe Bailey student.

“Anneke is a very talented young scientist and I am extremely proud of her and foresee a bright future ahead for her as a scientist.” said Prof Du Preez.
