UJ thunderstruck by NWU onslaught

Thunderbolt and lightning, very, very frightening. Dangerous weather meant that the North-West University (NWU) Eagles could not complete their Varsity Cup clash against UJ in Johannesburg on Monday night, and the game had to be replayed on Tuesday morning, 19 March. The result? It rained tries as the visitors from Potchefstroom ran in seven times to make it four wins from five games. The scoreboard read 49-12.

Eighth man Marvelous Mashimbiye scored four scintillating tries in what was again an outstanding performance by the immensely talented loose forward. Calvin Clack, Keanu Windvogel and Matthew Fortuin were responsible for the Eagles’ other tries. Zinedine Robinson slotted six conversions.

The Shimlas remain the log leaders with 22 points, followed by the NWU Eagles on 20, Maties on 18 and Ikeys on 18. The Shimlas have two more bonus points than the Eagles, although Burger van der Westhuizen’s men sport a far superior points difference.

The Eagles next face CUT on their home turf in Bloemfontein on Monday, 25 March. The game will be played at 19:00, but will not be broadcast live.
