Stage is set for SEW 2018

With the 2018 rendition of the Student Entrepreneurship Week (SEW2018) just a week away, the stage is set for a full programme on the North-West University’s (NWU) campus in Vanderbijlpark.

The project, which is run in conjunction with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), will take place from 20 to 23 August and will see all South African institutions of higher learning taking part.

The campus programme consists of four sub-programmes, aptly named: Let’s make a difference in our community, Let’s have some fun, Let’s get serious and Let’s get creative. All the programmes will be facilitated by the bhive Enterprise Development Centre (EDC), a dynamic hub of entrepreneurial activity in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences.

Let’s make a difference in our community

On Monday, 20 August, interested students can join the bhive EDC team for a tour of Sharpeville and a subsequent brainstorming session on how to best address some of the daily socio-economic challenges facing this well-known township. The first 20 students who register for the tour, will be accommodated in this programme.

Following the tour, the participating students will be afforded the opportunity to pitch their respective business ideas – as it pertains to the Sharpeville challenge – on Thursday, 23 August. One lucky student will be awarded a R1 000 cash prize for his/her pitch.

To register please send your details to Natanya.meyer@nwu.ac.za no later than 16 August.

Let’s have some fun

A fun activity schedule has been drawn-up for SEW2018 and include:

  • Fill the balloon bucket, 20 August
  • Memory buzz, 21 August
  • FIFA Challenge, 22 August
  • Twister, 23 August

The activities will start at 11:30 and will take place on the lawn in front of Building 6. Students are welcome to join in as many activities as they wish and participation is free. Fun prizes are up for grabs.

Let’s get serious

One of the highlights of the week will be a Student Peer-to-Peer Seminar during which student entrepreneurs will share their experiences and success stories. The line-up of the event include: Malcom Crellzy X (model and entrepreneur), Boitumelo Mofikoe (co-founder and managing director of MyGrowthFund, founder and CEO of BM Ventures) and Thato Moeng (Muffineers). Together, the students will focus on topics such as personal branding, building your vision and leadership. The seminar is scheduled from 09:00 to 12:00 at the Open Incubator at Building 3.

The afternoon session will see several experts and mentors take to the floor to share some much-needed expertise and lessons learnt. These mentors include Dr Joe Molete (life coach and strategist), Dr Lucas Moloi (President of the SA Institute of Quality and Innovation and founder of the Learning Eagles School of Entrepreneurship) and Florence Ndlovu (founder of Rebels Pizza, prime impression consultant and ‘hustlepreneur’). The session will start at 13:00.
