Research contributes to the understanding of key sectors contributing to LED

A doctoral research study which is hailed for contributing profoundly to the field of Local Economic Development (LED), has found that community service, trade, construction, finance and electricity sectors would contribute most to economic development and growth in the Limpopo province’s Capricorn region.

In his study, Analysis of key economic sectors promoting local economic development (LED) for strategy development in the Capricorn region, Limpopo Province, Dr Rufaro Garidzirai utilised a panel ARDL econometric model to analyse the key sectors that contribute to economic growth, employment and poverty alleviation in the region. To achieve his objective, he employed four models with the following dependent variables: economic growth, employment, poverty alleviation and a unique LED index.

According to Prof Danie Meyer, the promoter of the study, the results of the study contributes significantly to the body of LED knowledge. The outcomes further supports the notion that sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing require improved production methods through innovation, incentive and support. The latter will furthermore need to be supported by policy implementation and skills training as to comprehensively contribute substantially to LED in the region.
