RAG handover brings a tear to the eye

A student event with a difference. This is how students described the recent RAG community handover and first-ever Final-Year Farewell get together of the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Vanderbijlpark.

RAG community handover

A quiet audience struggled to keep back the tears at an emotional hand over of, approximately 4 000 tins of non-perishable food that was donated by staff and students as part of the RAG initiative.

The tins were shared between Mathwalas Children’s Home and Bophelong Children’s Home, both from a nearby township, Bophelong. The audience listened as representatives from the two beneficiaries explained more about their respective projects, what they have been through and the hopes and dreams that they have for the children in their care.

Some of the children who reside in the homes were present. These children were all victims of abuse or neglect in some form or another.

The RAG committee dressed each child in a shirt from the various residences. Thami Mangezi, projects officer of the Student Representative Council for 2016/2017 explained that this gesture was to signify that they represent the students of the future.

An emotional Thami also told the children that nothing is impossible and even though their current circumstances may be tough, their futures do not have to be.

The children proceeded to sing a gospel song for the audience, who joined the little voices in harmony. The children enjoyed eats and treats together with the students. The afternoon was concluded with fun and games on the green banks of the Vaal River.

The RAG community on the NWU’s campus in Vanderbijlpark handed over more than 4 000 tins of non-perishable items to two children’s homes in Bophelong.
