Professor honoured for contribution to mental health advocacy

Efforts to strengthen mental health awareness and policy in South Africa were in focus as Prof Leepile Sehularo from the North-West University (NWU) received the “Special Impact Mental Health Award” during the first Keturah Mental Health Awards in South Africa.

“I am honoured to receive this award,” said Prof Sehularo. “It reflects the collective effort of professionals, students and partners who are committed to building stronger mental health systems. Our work must continue to centre on inclusion, access and collaboration.”

The award was presented on 25 October 2025 at Le Chateau Guest House and Conference Centre in Johannesburg under the theme “Fatherhood and its impact on mental health”.

Started in Uganda and extended to South Africa in 2025, the Keturah Mental Health Awards celebrate individuals and organisations working to improve mental health through research, advocacy, public policy and clinical practice. The initiative seeks to encourage partnerships that promote access to care and drive innovation within the mental health sector.

As director of the Lifestyle Diseases research entity at the NWU, Prof Sehularo has led several initiatives aimed at improving community mental health services.

He collaborates with institutions such as Bophelong Psychiatric Hospital, Kgatelopele Wellness Centre and the North West College of Nursing to expand access to support and education. These partnerships include awareness campaigns designed to address stigma and promote early intervention in mental health care.

Beyond his academic leadership, Prof Sehularo plays a key role in provincial mental health governance. He has served on the North West Mental Health Review Board, contributing to oversight and planning for mental health services. He is currently serving his second term as a board member at Bophelong Psychiatric Hospital, where he provides guidance on ethical, clinical and policy matters.

Prof Sehularo’s ongoing research and advocacy continue to influence mental health awareness and policy development across South Africa. His recognition by Keturah underscores the importance of sustained collaboration between universities, health institutions and policymakers

to create a coordinated response to the country’s mental health challenges.
