NWU Varsity Football ‘underdogs’ bag another crucial victory

The North-West University (NWU) Varsity football team, the 2017 tournament’s underdogs, clinched yet another crucial victory against Wits University in their encounter at the Mahikeng Stadium on Thursday, 3 August 2017.

This clearly sets them on their way to reclaim their tournament glory and emerge as this season’s champions.

Seven minutes into the match, the NWU drew first blood with striker Mogomotsi Molefe in jersey number 12, finding the back of the net with a scorching right sweep. Always not far from the action, Cameron Chweu, in jersey number 10, extended the lead with yet another sweeping kick three minutes before the game went into half time.

Wits was awarded a penalty five minutes into the game’s second half, and found the back of the net with the assistance of Luke Pareira in jersey number 7.

Not to be outdone on their home turf, the NWU’s Wendelle Martin in jersey number 17, and the team’s captain, Sandile Mbatha in jersey number 6, both scored goals, sealing Wits’ fate in the second round of the 2017 Varsity Football tournament.

“As a team we are playing the kind of football that our fans want us to play,” said the NWU’s Mogomotsi Molefe, jersey number 12. “They have believed in us when at times it seemed bleak, and I’m just glad they came out in their numbers to see us honour them.”

With their maiden victory in an away game against the University of Fort Hare and their second win against Wits propelling them to the top of the fixture log, the NWU is fast pacing itself to being one of the formidable teams to look out for in this season’s tournament.
