In a gym-turned-arena in the North West Province, 17 student-athletes from the North-West University (NWU) stepped forward one by one, each bringing months of repetition, routine and self-control to the spotlight.
Competing against 54 of the province’s best, they left with 21 trophies, one overall title and 11 invitations to the national stage.
Representing the NWU’s Mahikeng Campus, the team competed in the International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation (IFBB) North West Provincial Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships on 2 August 2025.
By the time the final callouts were made, the squad had earned seven golds, seven silvers and six bronze placements. Frans Chauke was named overall winner in the men’s physique division.
The event served as more than a showcase of strength. For 11 team members it was a qualifying platform. They will join athletes from across South Africa at the IFBB SA National Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships later this year, bringing the NWU’s total national representation to 18.
These 11 team members are: Kudzai Mudzingwa, Nomthandazo Galate, Frans Chauke, Sandile Dike, Kevin Pandeka, Onkemetse Lesalagae, Tshepo Baloyi, Prince Nkosi, Tshiamo Sekgobela, Jacob Jiyane and Siboniso Sonqishe.
Tshepo, who doubles as coach and competitor, said the team trains with more than trophies in mind. “This is about showing what structure and focus can produce,” he said. “It’s also about how students manage two goals, academic success and competitive sport, with the same intensity.”
For the athletes, the national championships are the next round of testing, a place where strength meets pressure and every pose counts.

Nomthandazo Galate scored first place in the Junior Bikini category.

Prince Nkosi came first in the Classic Physique Under 175cm, and second in the Junior Bodybuilding category.

Tshepo Baloyi claimed first place in the Classic Bodybuilding Over 175cm, and second place in Bodybuilding up 90.
