NWU Soccer Institute manager elected USSA Football secretary general

The growing influence of the North-West University (NWU) Soccer Institute in national university sport was underscored this week when institute manager Dr Vuyolwethu Sambo was elected secretary general of University Sport South Africa (USSA) Football, a body responsible for coordinating football competitions across higher-education institutions in the country.

Dr Sambo’s election places NWU at the centre of decision-making structures that oversee university football tournaments, athlete development and national student competitions organised under the authority of USSA, the governing body responsible for sport at tertiary institutions in South Africa.

USSA controls national student sport events and works through recognised sport associations, including football, to organise tournaments, select national university teams and coordinate participation in continental and international competitions.

Dr Sambo, who manages the NWU Soccer Institute at the Mahikeng Campus, has been involved in university football development for several years. His academic and sporting journey at NWU began when he enrolled as a student-athlete and later progressed to postgraduate studies, eventually moving into leadership within the institute.

Reacting to his election, Dr Sambo said the position carries responsibility beyond personal achievement.

“This role is not about me as an individual but about strengthening university football in South Africa. We must create structures that allow student-athletes to develop while also ensuring that institutions work together to grow the game in a sustainable way,” he said.

He added that university sport remains an important pathway for talent development.

“USSA football plays a critical role in the national football eco-system. Many players move from university competitions into professional leagues, so our responsibility at USSA level is to make sure the environment is organised, competitive and supportive of academic success,” said Dr Sambo.

The NWU Soccer Institute has produced several players who progressed to professional football and has consistently competed in national university tournaments, including USSA and Varsity Football competitions.

Dr Sambo’s election is expected to strengthen collaboration between universities and contribute to the continued growth of university football, which remains one of the biggest in the USSA system.
