This is according to Prof Herman van der Merwe, deputy dean for teaching and learning of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. During his welcome address at the Autumn Graduation Ceremony of the NWU’s campus in Vanderbijlpark, Prof Van der Merwe alluded to the fact that graduates engender a multifaceted set of attributes, namely: critical and creative thinking skills, global awareness and digital literacy.
The campus’ Autumn Graduation Ceremony will see more than 1 000 students take to the stage to receive their qualifications. The four-day graduation ceremony, consisting of 11 sessions, is taking place at the Quest Conference Estate in Vanderbijlpark.
The first day of the graduation week saw 345 students graduate within the BSc and BCom fields of study respectively. The degree Honours Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSc IT) was also conferred.

Proud alumni
In her closing address Prof Susan Coetzee van Rooy, acting deputy vice-chancellor, congratulated the graduates on becoming members of the NWU alumni fraternity. “A graduation ceremony marks the start of a new and exciting phase in a graduate’s relationship with his or her alma mater,” said Prof Coetzee van Rooy and explained that upon receiving a qualification, a student’s status changes to that of a scholar and alumnus.
“Our alumni are important ambassadors and friends of the campus,” remarked Prof Coetzee van Rooy and added that the NWU is extremely proud of its alumni network that spans not only the African continent but the world at large.
