NWU duo impress during the MultiChoice Diski Challenge

Two young soccer stars from the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Vanderbijlpark recently had the opportunity to don the Kaizer Chiefs player jersey during the MultiChoice Diski Challenge’s derby (PSL Reserve League) festival which took place in Durban.

Bongani Mabena and McCoy Sithole took to the playing field when budding rivals Kaizer Chiefs face-offed against Orlando Pirates on Sunday, 12 November 2017, in a one-all-draw. The derby saw the following six-match line-up: Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates; Golden Arrows vs AmaZulu; SuperSport United vs Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City vs Ajax Cape Town.

According to Thomas Thema, the sport officer responsible for football on the campus, the participation of the students in the derby not only bears testament to the level of football played at the campus, but also the good relationship that exists between the NWU and Kaizer Chiefs. “In 2018 we are expecting several players from within the ranks of the Kaizer Chiefs Football Development Club to register at the NWU to further their studies,” says Thomas.

* A third player from the NWU’s campus in Vanderbijlpark, Sbibongiseni Hlengwa, was also selected to play but did not form part of the travelling team since he was preparing to write his final exam.
