NWU committed to ensuring a bright future for its students

With South Africa’s unemployment rate constantly rising, the North-West University (NWU) is trying to secure its students’ future by bringing job opportunities to them.

On 6 August 2019 the NWU’s Career Centre, together with Department of Mineral Resources, organised a career fair for students on the campus in Potchefstroom.

The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources Ms Bavelile Hlongwa, Executive Mayor Cllr Kgotso Khumalo, members of the Mayoral Committee from JB Marks Municipality as well as officials of the North West Provincial Government.

Hundreds of students filled up the Alumni Hall and were briefed about bursary and employment opportunities in government, and with the NWU’s industry partners, Harmony Gold Mining Company and Impala Platinum.

Mining industry still has potential

Students had the opportunity to voice some of their concerns regarding employment opportunities in the mining industry.

Ms Hlongwa reassured them that although the mining industry is dwindling, the government is looking into mining other minerals and resources over the next few years.

“With South Africa fast approaching the fourth industrial revolution, equip yourselves with the necessary skills that will give you an added advantage in this new era,” she advised students.

“We need your bright young minds to conduct ground-breaking research that will help the mining industry to solve its problems.”

JB Marks Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr Kgotso Khumalo, Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources Ms Bavelile Hlongwa, and the NWU’s deputy vice-chancellor for teaching and learning, Prof Robert Balfour.
