New Technology Commons will enhance teaching and learning

The library on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Mahikeng is currently developing a Technology Commons which will consist of a MakerSpace, One Button and podcast studio.

With this addition, the Mahikeng Library will be the first across the NWU’s three campuses to sport these state of the art facilities.

“The library provides the space, and the equipment and support will be provided by the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL),” explains Louise Vos, senior manager for outreach, projects and quality at the Library and Information Services (LIS) department.

“The commons will enable students to familiarise themselves with the applicable technology as required by their respective curriculums,” she adds.

LIS is also embarking on a major refurbishment project to renovate the whole basement of the Mahikeng Library. This space will be used as an Information Commons, focussing on the needs of undergraduates.

This refurbishment is expected to start on 22 August 2019 and will be completed in April 2020.

“The logistical arrangements for the refurbishment are quite challenging. The approximately 104 000 law books which are currently in the basement need to be moved to the first floor, where a new Law Library will be established,” says Louise.

“During the construction period undergraduates will also not have access to the computer lab in the basement. It is therefore important to continuously liaise with students to ensure that they are informed about the project and alternative support measures available.”

Louise says the refurbishment will include ample computer workstations, fully equipped group study facilities, additional power points for mobile devices and a training room. Once the refurbishment is complete, the 24hr study facility adjacent to the Information Commons in the basement of the library will also be upgraded.

The refurbishment of the library on the NWU’s campus in Mahikeng includes seminar rooms equipped with LED screens, whiteboards and tables with power plugs and patch points.

Pendant lights will be used throughout the library to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
