How Mandela Day came about

It’s that time of the year again when social media feeds will be flooded with pictures and videos of good Samaritans doing their bit for Mandela Day.

67 Minutes for Mandela is in its 10th year of existence, and is still going strong.

On 18 July 2008, while the late Nelson Mandela was celebrating his 90th birthday in London, he said: “It is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now.”

A year later, in November 2009, the United Nations General Assembly made a unanimous decision and declared 18 July Nelson Mandela International Day.

This day is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world and the ability to make an impact.

On this day we commemorate the 67 years of service Nelson Mandela dedicated to social justice in South Africa and across the world.

The global Mandela Day campaign message is: Nelson Mandela has fought for social justice for 67 years; we’re asking you to start with 67 minutes.

Every year when you take part in this initiative, remember these wise words spoken by our Madiba: “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
