Gerrit Pienaar has been teaching property law at the Northwest University (previously the Potchefstroom University) from 1979, first as senior lecturer and since 1989 as professor. Presently he is the Director Post-Graduate Studies at the Law Faculty of the NWU. He obtained a LLD degree in 1988 with the thesis “The common law juristic person in South African private law”.

He is the author of several research publications on general property law issues, sectional titles, land registration and communal land tenure. He is also the author of a monograph Sectional titles and other fragmented property schemes published by Juta in the series Property Law Library during 2010.  He is a practising attorney since 1975, first in Pretoria and since 1980 in Potchefstroom.  His fields of speciality are property law, sectional titles, communal land law, property registration and unjustified enrichment.
