Prof. Nokwanda Edith Bam is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, at North-West University (NWU), South Africa. Her academic and research work focuses on nursing education, public health, implementation research, and strengthening programmes for people living with HIV/AIDS and diabetes mellitus. Her work reflects a strong commitment to improving health outcomes while developing the next generation of health professionals and researchers.
Prof. Bam is the recipient of a three-year NRF Thuthuka research award (2024–2026) supporting research on pregnant women living with HIV/AIDS and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The programme aims to develop and validate an integrated programme to improve GDM outcomes among pregnant women living with HIV/AIDS. The research has progressed substantially, with two Master’s students completing their studies with Distinctions, while the PhD component is currently at the data-collection stage.
Her commitment to excellence in teaching, mentorship and academic development has been recognised through several awards and fellowships. These include the North-West Provincial Department of Health Best Lecturer Award (2024), the Best Mentor Award (2024), and the Faculty of Health Sciences Teaching and Learning Award (2022). She was also selected for the Teaching Advancement at Universities (TAU5) Cohort (2025), reflecting her contribution to advancing teaching excellence in South African higher education. NWU records also highlight her involvement in academic mentorship and the development of mentoring competencies.
Prof. Bam is passionate about transformative nursing education, research excellence, mentorship and community-responsive health innovation, particularly in addressing complex maternal and chronic health challenges in South Africa.
