The North-West University (NWU) Eagles continued their push to defend their Varsity Netball crown with a convincing 60-37 victory over newcomers Central University of Technology (CUT) in round five of the competition.

The defending champions took control after a competitive opening quarter and never looked back. A strong defensive performance and accurate shooting helped the Eagles build a 23-goal winning margin. Defender Christi-Mari Coetzee stood out in the defensive unit of the Eagles and capped the victory by claiming her second Player of the Match award of the 2026 season.

The NWU started strongly, but the CUT showed early that they would not simply stand aside for the defending champions. The newcomers competed for possession and stayed within reach during the opening 15 minutes.

The Eagles held a 13-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The NWU shifted gears in the second quarter. The Eagles used their height advantage in the circle and increased the pressure on the attack by the CUT. Turnovers followed, and the NWU converted their opportunities to open a bigger gap.

By half-time, the Eagles had doubled their opponents’ score and led 27-15.

The CUT looked for a response in the third quarter and used the first power play of the match in an attempt to reduce the deficit. The Eagles had other ideas.

The defence by the NWU disrupted the attacking moves by the CUT, while the shooters kept the scoreboard moving at the other end. The defending champions stretched their lead to 49-22 by the end of the third quarter.

With the result firmly in their hands, the Eagles managed the final quarter well. The CUT continued to compete and added 15 goals, but the gap proved too large to close.

The NWU sealed the match 60-37, adding another victory to their Varsity Netball title defence.

The result gives the Eagles further momentum as the competition progresses and the battle for places in the knockout stages begins to take shape.
