CUT sneaks up on the NWU

There was no silver lining for the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Varsity Football team in their encounter against Central University of Technology (CUT) in their much anticipated duel on 24 August. CUT claimed the match with a 2-1 win.

Determined to heed the cry of their supporters to redeem themselves following the previous week’s punishment at the hands of the University of Western Cape’s ‘Operation Room’, the NWU drew first blood two minutes into the game when Cameron Chweu fired a scorcher of a goal that left CUT’s defence at the back scrambling to save face.

Using their pitch dominance and ball possession in their favour, CUT soon fired an equaliser with an effort by Rakgomo Taole. Soon thereafter they found the back of the net again with the help of Keitumetse Mabathoana, who scored what would be the winning goal.

“We take every game as it comes and that is what we have been doing from our first match,” said Vuyolwethu Sambo, the NWU team manager. “We came out here to play our best as a team. This means we have got to work even harder if we want to redeem ourselves and play the kind of football our supporters know we can play.”

The NWU faces the University of Johannesburg next in an away game on 31 August.
