Career Centre creating a buzz around employment possibilities

“A career fair offers university students a unique insight into the world of work, and the path that professionals took to reach their current level of employment. We, at the Career Centre, believe that these face-to-face interactions with future employers will inspire our students to not only make smart choices when it comes to internships and employment, but also motivate them to do their best in terms of their academic performance.”

This is according to Elette van den Berg - industrial psychologist and Career Centre liaison officer, at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Vanderbijlpark.

During the month of May the Career Centre (which is situated in the Learning and Research Commons), will be hosting two career fairs on 17 and 18 May 2017.

The first career fair takes the format of a general career fair targeting final year students and postgraduate students within the BA, BCom and BSc fields. The following employers will be available on the day:

  • Auditor General SA
  • Christian Art Distributers
  •  FNB
  • MWR InfoSecurity
  • NWU Business School
  • PWC
  • Standard Bank
  • The Small Enterprise Foundation
  • Teach South Africa
  • Reverside Software Solutions

The second career fair will take on the format of the annual Bean Counting Day for students busy with degree courses within the field of accounting sciences. The following employers will be available on the day:

  • ACCA
  • Auditor General SA
  • BDO
  • KPMG
  • LPH Chartered Accountants
  • MAZARS
  • NB Training Academy and Accounting Excellence
  • PWC
  • RSM ZA
  • SAICA

Both these career fairs will take place in the Honours Wing of the Library (Building 13) and will commence at 09:00.

According to Elette, career fairs offer a unique insight into the world of work and affords students the chance to talk to recruiters face-to-face. “You’re not just an application in a database; with a good first impression the recruiters will remember you as a person,” she says.
