In the scientific field, learning theory and doing practical work at university provides a foundation for aspiring scientists, but developing real-world skills is what prepares students for professional environments.

To strengthen the link between academic learning and industry practice, the subject group Chemistry at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus partnered with Austrian company Anton Paar to conduct a training session for honours and postgraduate chemistry students on 9 and 10 October 2025.

The company, which is internationally recognised for its research and development capabilities, develops and produces precision laboratory instruments and process measurement technology used in sectors such as mining, manufacturing, energy, pharmaceuticals, water and academia.

According to Prof Mduduzile Cele from the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, the collaboration forms part of the subject group’s approach to preparing students for workplace expectations.

“This training prepares students for the world of work and provides them with advanced knowledge and skills to utilise chemical instruments that are used often in industries,” he says.

The programme covered theory and hands-on practice on in-suite X-ray diffraction, particle analysis and gas adsorption analysis and allowed students to apply their knowledge to laboratory instruments and data interpretation processes used in various sectors.

“This provides students with the opportunity to understand chemical analysis and enhance their employability,” says Prof Cele.
