The North-West University (NWU) brought together alumni, staff and partners on 27 September 2025 at Hunters Rest Hotel in Rustenburg for an inspiring evening focused on education, mentorship, and the power of alumni networks in building the university’s future.
NWU Convocation president Tutu Kgobane reflected on the power of connection, noting that convocation membership creates opportunities for professional growth and collaboration. He encouraged alumni to add their voices to the university’s journey and announced that membership fees will increase on 1 January 2026, urging alumni to join before year-end.
Career Services and Alumni Relations senior manager Thoriso Maseng highlighted South Africa’s unemployment challenge, reminding guests that education remains the key to social and economic progress. He emphasised the vital role of alumni in keeping the NWU’s programmes relevant, mentoring young people, and investing time, knowledge, and resources back into the institution.
Thoriso also celebrated the NWU’s strong culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, showcasing initiatives such as the Biennial Alumni Excellence Awards, the Love Your Love giving campaign, Varsity Cup events, book fairs, and international engagements across Africa and Europe. Looking ahead, he shared exciting developments, including plans for the Desmond Tutu School of Medicine and the new schools of Mines and Mining Engineering and Veterinary Sciences.
Guest speaker Dr Mmabatho Mfikwe, chief director at the Department of Public Works and Roads, delivered an inspiring message on leadership, ethics and resilience. She encouraged women to uplift and mentor one another, reminding graduates that lifelong learning is essential for success.
Closing the event, Abigail Olifant from the Development and Fundraising department called on alumni to strengthen the NWU’s international footprint by sharing networks and expertise to support major projects and future growth.
