Academic staff members benefit from new induction programme

Professional development takes center stage at the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at the North-West University (NWU).

This dedication towards excellence and innovation in all teaching and learning activities not only benefit staff and students immensely, but also assists in realising the university’s vision of superior academic excellence.

A new induction programme for academics is just one of the ways in which CTL promotes excellence. The programme, which is compulsory for all new academic staff appointed at the university, is aimed at enhancing the lecturing capabilities of these staff members.

Funded by the University Capacity Development Grant (UCDG), the programme models a blended learning experience and in the process combines traditional contact lecturing with new online technologies.

After the completion of the programme both the novice and the experienced staff member have to complete an online component, attend a three-day campus programme, attend a one-day faculty programme and create and submit a comprehensive portfolio of evidence. In short: prove their competency within a blended learning teaching environment. After the succesful completion of the programme, participants receive a certificate of completion.

According to Dr Manuela Fernandes-Martins, induction coordinator, 54 colleagues have completed the programme since June of this year.
