Professor Alida Herbst is a registered social worker and currently Director of the School of Psychosocial Health. She practised for 13 years as medical social worker in 1 Military and the MediClinic Heart and Kloof hospitals where she gained expertise in the fields of narrative, trauma, grief and bereavement counselling; the psychosocial adjustment of patients with cancer, heart disease and other chronic illnesses; support to the families of such patients and the self-care of caregivers.

She holds a MA in Social Work with Play Therapy (University of Pretoria) and a PhD in Social Work (North-West University). Her PhD study focused on a narrative programme to support young adults living with HIV. She was appointed as Senior Lecturer in Social Work at the NWU in 2005 where she taught a number of social work modules related to social work management, substance abuse/dependency and social work in health. She annually participates as guest lecturer during the International Days of the Thomas More University and University College Leuven-Limburg in Belgium. During 2016, she co-developed an online short learning programme for the NWU titled, Psychosocial Interventions in End-of-life and Bereavement Care.

Her research focus is the psychosocial health of individuals, groups and communities, with specific emphasis on narratives of illness and health. She participated in research projects such as the PEPFAR/USAID funded, Choose Life Project and the international PURE study. She co-authored a book with the title: Memory work – telling your story through life maps, recently edited a South African textbook, titled, Trauma Counselling: principles and practice in South Africa today and authored/ co-authored a number of scholarly articles in international and national journals. A total of 17 Masters and 8 PhD students completed their studies under her supervision. She is graded a C-3 researcher with the National Research Foundation of South Africa.

Retha Bloem is a social worker with a 25 year academic research history. As a graduate from the University of Pretoria, born in 1968, she obtained her B.SW, BA (Hons) industrial Sociology, (cum laude) Magister Atrium,(cum laude) Masters of Social work (play therapy) (cum laude) and Ph.D. (UP) under promotorship of Prof Rina Delport in a period of 10 year. After lecturing for 5 years at the University of Pretoria, in Sociology, she became a faculty member as senior Lector at UNISA leading as Director the institute for Child Youth and Family studies. She was appointed in March 2011 as head/ associate professor for the newly established Centre for Child youth and Family Studies, North West University, Potchefstroom, with the main emphasis on the establishment of a community based research platform for the North West University in the Western Cape. This research platform provides under her management an inter-disciplinary community for training, consultation, research and rendering services to enhance the psychosocial well-being of children, youth and families.

Her research expertise include 18 Years post graduate supervision experience within the field of children. She supervised up to date 58 Masters Students and 10 PhD Students successfully. Her broad scientific field of interest lies within Psycho-social wellbeing for children and youth with emphasis on intervention strategies, community work, social justice and advocacy.

Her participation, publications and contributing seminars and papers include various national and international papers all in the field of social work. The past three years her field of expertise lies within community participation and community engagement. Her personal focus within this environment is to unlock the indigenous wisdoms and potential of communities within a reciprocal relationship with Higher Education Institutions.

Her work motto is “In Africa for Africa.”

I am a lecturer at the Centre for Child, Youth and Family Studies (Faculty of Health Sciences) at the North-west University.

I have obtained a BA degree in Social Work at the University of Stellenbosch in 1995. In 1997 I have obtained a MA in Social Work (Play Therapy) at the University of Pretoria. I have also completed my PhD in Social Work at the University of Stellenbosch in 2011. The title of my PhD was: Occupational stress and the handling thereof by social workers involved in intervention with sexually abused children.

My current research focuses on children’s participation from a children’s rights perspective. Other research interests are: interventions with children, play therapy, child, youth and family studies.
