I have specialized in the field of strengths-based psychology for a number of years. My research interest is in the facilitation of resilience, and in successful adaptation to / optimal performance within any context that poses challenges in terms of the maintenance of one’s psychological well-being. I am especially interested in the utilization of so-called nature-assisted, or adventure interventions in bringing about these positive changes through experiential learning. Nature is both utilized as a rich therapeutic context, and acknowledged as a co-therapist in bringing about positive change in the lives of participants / clients. Although this is effective in both individual and group settings, I am especially interested in the latter. I teach group therapy and –dynamics at the Master’s level, and have acquired some experience in using this therapeutic modality in my research and clinical work.

Marita Heyns is a researcher in the Optentia Research Entity of the NWU. She has a PhD in Psychology and a Master degree in Business Administration (MBA) as academic background. Her interests generally reflect Positive Psychology and Positive Organizational Scholarship related topics. Dr Vicki Koen is a registered Research Psychologist and Registered Counsellor who has been involved with the NWU since 2011. She is currently a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychosocial Health at the Mahikeng Campus of the NWU. With an interest in familial relationships, Vicki did her first Master’s degree in Psychology on the parent-adolescent relationship and adolescent well-being. The same year she completed a B-Psych internship in counselling or counsellor in training practicum at the NWU Vanderbijlpark Campus.

Later, she completed a Master’s degree in Research Psychology at the North-West University. Her dissertation of this degree focused on African female adolescents' experience of the parent-adolescent relationship. In order to be able to register as a Research Psychologist with the HPCSA, she completed a Research Psychologist internship at the School of Behavioural Sciences at the NWU, VTC in 2011. During this time she also commenced with a PhD in Psychology entitled “Family psychosocial well-being in a South African context”, which was completed in 2012.

In 2016 she completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Africa Unit for Transdisciplinary Health Research (AUTHeR) at the NWU, Potchefstroom and was involved in AUTHER’s Master of Arts in Positive Psychology Program as a supervisor and lecturer. In 2018 she also received a Master’s degree in Positive Psychology.

Her research is mainly in the area of positive psychology and is specifically focused on family well-being. She also has a specific interest in qualitative research methods and data collection techniques.

Christelle Liversage obtained her Ph.D. in Health Sciences with Positive Psychology and is the program chair for the Master of Arts in Positive Psychology (MAPP) at the Africa Unit for Transdisciplinary Health Research (AUTHeR) in the Faculty of Health Sciences. She was a recipient of the 2022 Faculty Teaching and Learning Award. Her industry experience includes heading up an educational institution, the Africa operational director for the Institute of Leadership and Management (London), and Africa Learning and Development Manager at the British High Commission where she worked in 9 different African countries. Her area of expertise lies in enhancing the well-being of individuals, employees, and companies toward flourishing for which she designs bespoke interventions.

Werner started his academic career as a student assistant in the Sociology department in 1996, and is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Social Sciences at the North-West University. Werner obtained his PhD in Sociology in 2005 at the NWU, and completed a Master’s degree in Positive Psychology at the same institution in 2014. His main research field is the study of psycho-social well-being, especially in relation to religion and spirituality, as well as the natural environment. He is particularly interested in the ways in which various aspects of individual and communal human well-being (such as subjective well-being, hope, meaning in life, etc.) are impacted by and related to religion, spirituality and the environment.
