Prof. Tobie van Dyk is an extensively published author of applied linguistic work, focusing on academic literacies theory and practice, academic reading and writing development, and in particular academic language ability testing. He is considered an authority in particularly the fields of academic literacies and language testing – all focus areas under the broad theme of language for specific purposes within applied linguistics. Apart from his research, he is also node manager in the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR) and director in the Inter-institutional Centre for Language Development and Assessment (ICELDA). These two entities contribute extensively towards applied linguistic product development, and research and innovation. The former includes development of academic support materials in writing specifically, multilingual resource development such as academic wordlists, tests and educational videos, games that advance multilingualism, and the development of a multi-level, multi-genre, multilingual learner corpus of academic writing. The latter includes a focus on academic articles, academic books and textbooks, as well as postgraduate supervision. Prof. Van Dyk has an extensive local academic network and strong ties to universities in Europe, Canada and the USA.

After completing my BA degree, I enrolled for a BA Honours degree in Language Practice at the NWU’s Vanderbijlpark Campus, which I obtained with distinction. I then enrolled for my masters degree at the same institution, under the supervision of Dr Ia Esterhuizen and Prof. Haidee Kruger. The dissertation sprouted from two subjects that I completed in my Honours degree, namely editing and text linguistics combined with my own curiosity as to how writers and readers interact through written discourse; more specifically study guides. In this dissertation, titled Die leesbaarheid van akademiese tekste: ’n tekslinguistiese ondersoek (translated as: The readability of academic texts: a text linguistic investigation), my main focus was on establishing which elements (both textual and meta-textual) play a role as far as readability and accessibility are concerned and which of these elements have an impact on the establishment of a successful reader-writer relationship in tertiary study guides. I received my MA degree cum laude in September 2009.

Because of my interest in Language Practice, I worked as a freelance language practitioner from 2004, and in 2005 I became one of the editors, proofreaders and translators at Carpe Diem Media (book division). In April 2005, I was appointed as one of the text editors and proofreaders at Maksiman magazine, and I also did freelance editing for Finesse magazine.

I was appointed as a part-time lecturer in Afrikaans Linguistics and Language Practice at the NWU Vaal in January 2006, where I also coordinated Babel (the School of Languages’ informal training centre for senior students in the Language Practice subject group). Between May 2006 and February 2008, I helped to develop Babel into a thriving professional language agency, now known as CTrans, which specialises in translation and academic editing. In January 2013, I resigned as manager of CTrans to pursue an academic career.

I am currently busy with a PhD in Applied Linguistics. My focus is on the possibilities and challenges that multilingualism bring to the Afrikaans Academic Literacy classroom. My research interest continues to lie in the development of students’ academic literacies and the perceptions that students have about written discourse.

After completing a degree in Language Practice I worked as a classroom interpreter and freelance language practitioner. I started work at the NWU in 2007 as junior lecturer where I presented modules in Academic Literacy, Language Practice and English Linguistics. The modules that focussed on the influence of various linguistic theories on translation theory contributed to my interest in linguistics.

My research career started in 2008 when I investigated the factors that play a role in interpreters’ performance in the classroom. The research was influenced by my undergraduate studies in Language Practice. During this time, I developed an interest in linguistics. I pursued this interest in the completion of my master’s dissertation entitled Specificity in lexical verbs: a corpus-based lexicological study. In the dissertation I investigated lexical specificity in the communication verbs of Black South African English (BSAE) and first language (L1) English. Currently, I am working on my doctoral thesis in which I provide a collostructional analysis of the verb complementation patterns in BSAE.

Johanita Kirsten, senior lecturer in Afrikaans Linguistics at the Vanderbijlpark Campus of the North-West University, is interested in recent and ongoing changes in Afrikaans language use. She completed her MA and PhD in Afrikaans and Dutch (Historical Linguistics) at the NWU under supervision of prof. Bertus van Rooy, and received the ABSA Bronze Medal for her MA dissertation. The research topics she has published on include changes in the verbal system of written Afrikaans during initial standardization of Afrikaans in the early 20th century, changes regarding temporal reference in Afrikaans during the course of the 20th and early 21st century, and how this links to theories of language change; another focus of her work is issues of language purity in the historical descriptions of Afrikaans and ideological issues in published linguistic research. She continues to research different recent and ongoing changes in Afrikaans usage, as well as ideological issues in Afrikaans linguistics. She has been teaching undergraduate and postgraduate Afrikaans Linguistics modules at the NWU since 2012, and supervises postgraduate studies in Afrikaans Linguistics and General Linguistics.

I am a lecturer and researcher working in the field of linguistics, and a member of the UPSET research focus area, at the Vanderbijlpark Campus of the North-West University.

I started my academic career by completing my BA in Humanities at North-West University in 2011, and received an award as the best performer in the final year for Bachelor of Arts in the Faculty of Humanities. Thereafter, I completed an Honours BA in English, during which I wrote a mini-dissertation focusing on the processing of texting features, such as sms-shortcuts. My MA dissertation, titled A Diachronic Analysis of the Progressive Aspect in Black South African English, investigated the historical development of the meanings of stative and dynamic verbs when combined with the progressive aspect.

I am currently involved in the compilation of a diachronic corpus of Black South African English (BSAE), which encompasses the collection and processing of fiction, letter, and newspaper data that ranges from the 1880s to the 2000s.

I am currently working on historical language change in Black South African English (BSAE), investigating the development of salient features of this variety, and how these developments compare to those found within White South African English (WSAE).

I am also interested in the mechanisms involved in processing and understanding language, the brain’s response to reading and writing in different genres, child and adult language acquisition, eye-tracking, and the morpho-syntactic deviations found within E.E. Cummings’ poetry
