Prof Martin van Eldik obtained a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the North-West University in Potchefstroom. He is an associate professor in the School of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering where his research group focus on research relevant to the thermal-fluid industry with the emphasis on energy systems. The field of application is mainly the commercial, industrial and mining sectors. This include research into the next generation of heat pumps including the use of CO2 as refrigerant for high temperature applications. Another research focus is the use of combined solar water heating and heat pumps for larger commercial and industrial applications. In terms of the mining sector, his research focus on the development and use of mobile refrigeration for underground applications, as well as other energy saving opportunities. Martin is also a Business Unit Manager with M-Tech Industrial (Pty) Ltd mainly focusing on turnkey energy efficient heat pump hot water solutions for the commercial and industrial sectors. He is also involved with the technical and R&D aspects of M-Tech's water heating heat pumps and underground mobile refrigeration cooling units.

Werner Kaiser is currently a full-time senior lecturer at the School of Mechanical engineering at the North-West University. He has been invlolved in Engineering educatgion since 1998 and has lectured various courses in thermal fluid science, Mechanics of machines, Computer aided drawing at the North-West Unviersity and the Tshwane University of Technology. He has worked for 5 years in industry, where was involved in Energy management projects as well as being a test engineer for the PBMR high-pressure test bench. During this time he gained valuable experience in test procedures as well as energy management projects. HE is currently focusing on the application of high-temperature heat pumps for industrial applications.

Jat du Toit is professor of Mechanical Engineering at the North-West University. He obtained a B.Eng. (Hons.)(Civil) and a M.Eng.(Civil) from the University of Stellenbosch and a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. He has published more than 100 papers in international and national journals and conference proceedings and was the co-editor of the proceedings of two conferences.

He is a registered professional engineer with practical experience in the fields of civil, mechanical, chemical and metallurgical engineering and focuses on computational fluid dynamics modelling. He is a partner of a commercial engineering software development and consulting firm.

He has also been a senior technical consultant for the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) project and serves on the editorial board of the national “R&D Journal” and the international journal “Computational Thermal Sciences”. He is a past-president of the executive committee of the South African Association for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. His is a member of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering, a member of the South African Academy for Arts and Science, a member of the European Academy of Sciences, a member of the International Association of Computational Mechanics, a member of the South African Association for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, as well as a member of the Assembly for International Heat Transfer Conferences and the Scientific Committee of the International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer.

His current interests are the development of advanced thermal-fluid simulation models for high temperature gas-cooled nuclear reactors, the development of a multilevel solution strategy for thermal-flow problems within a systems CFD framework and the teaching and application of a new global approach to the Galerkin finite element method.
