He teaches Music Theory at North-West University’s School of Music and is the Director of the Research Focus Area Musical Arts in South Africa: Resources and Applications (MASARA). His research focuses on the works of art music composers from Anglophone Africa, especially those of the British-South African composer Priaulx Rainier. Chris is also engaged in artistic (practice-based and -led) research in Composition.    </p> <p>Chris has presented research papers at conferences in South Africa, Serbia, Ireland, Chile, the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany. He has published articles and reviews in South African Music Studies, Musicus, Critical Arts: South-North Cultural and Media Studies, Musicology Australia, Perspectives of New Music, the Österreichische Musikzeitschrift and the World New Music Magazine, and a book chapter in Ritualised Belonging: Musicing and Spirituality in the South African Context (Peter Lang Verlag).</p> <p>Chris’s compositions have been performed locally and abroad, including Harvard University’s Paine Hall in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and at the World New Music Days in Johannesburg. He has been a visiting lecturer at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, and has presented guest lectures at the University of Lincoln (UK) and the University of Malawi (Zomba). Chris represented NewMusicSA, the South African chapter of the International Society for Contemporary Music, as a delegate at their annual assemblies in Kosice, Bratislava and Vienna (2013) and Wroclaw (2014). He served as editor of NewMusicSA’s Bulletin from 2010-2015. As an active performer she was engaged in professional performances and productions for Pact Opera, Salon Music, Brooklyn Theatre, Roodepoort Theatre and the Black Tie Ensemble. She appears on three of Salon Music’s CD’s and DVD, “Celebration”. Antoinette performed the world premiere of Hendrik Hofmeyr’s Song Cycle for Soprano and Orchestra (1999). In 1999 she became a founder member of the Black Tie Ensemble and since 2003 became involved in their incubator development program for young singers as singing and music theory lecturer (receiving a certificate for excellence as theory teacher by Unisa). Since 2003 Antoinette was a lecturer in singing at the University of Pretoria and at TUT. In 2009 she was a guest lecturer for the UP in Finland as part of an international exchange. She is still very active as a professional singer in all major cities in South Africa in recitals and with the Gauteng Philharmonic Orchestra.</p> <p>Antoinette was appointed fulltime singing lecturer at the North-West University in Potchefstroom in 2012 where she obtained a Master’s degree in Music, cum laude, and have presented papers at international conferences. She is a recipient of numerous NWU research awards for excellence in music performance and for creative research outputs, as well as an award for teaching excellence. She has published in academic journals such as Koers and SAJCH. In collaboration with her colleagues of the voice department at the NWU School of Music, they were recently nominated by kykNet for a Fiësta award for the RSG Dis Opera production at the Aardklop and KKNK arts festivals which involved all the singing students. Furthermore, she has served as adjudicator on the Mimi Coertse voice competitions as well as on the DVD screening panel at the Unisa National and International voice competitions. She graduated in 2020 with a PhD in music at NWU. He completed a M.Mus dissertation under the supervision of Deirdre Hansen (UCT) in 1985 on Venda musical bows and the xylophone, and a doctoral thesis on Venda guitar music in 1993 under the guidance of Andrew Tracey (Rhodes).</p> <p>Jaco joined the University of Venda as lecturer in 1986. He has been teaching musicology in the School of Music at North-West University in Potchefstroom since 1995. His essays on Venda musical culture appear in the Journal of Ethnomusicology, the Journal of African Music, the South African Journal of Musicology, the British Journal of Ethnomusicology, the Journal for Transdisciplinary Research in Southern Africa, the Journal of the Musical Arts in Africa, Literator, LitNet and the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.</p> <p>Jaco is dedicated towards developing a new music curriculum for South Africa. To this end he makes regular contributions towards The Talking Drum (PASMAE, in collaboration with the University of KwaZulu-Natal). Jaco currently specialises in the documentation and study of Venda musical arts of precolonial origin, and has edited three annotated collections of Venda ngano song stories, namely Venda lashu: Tshivenda songs, song stories and musical games (North-West University, 2004), The flamboyant rooster and other Tshivenda song stories (North-West University, 2007) and The girls in the baobab: Venda stories from the Limpopo Valley (2nd edition, North-West University, 2013).
