He is a senior lecturer in the School of Economic Sciences at the Vanderbijlpark campus where he lectures at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels. His teaching experience has extended across numerous fields including microeconomics, macroeconomics, fiscal and monetary policy, as well as research methodology in economics.</p> <p>Jacques’ research focus is mainly grounded in the intricate dynamics of globalisation and its profound impact on economic, social, and political dimensions. He particularly delves into how the integration of countries shape their economic development landscapes, exploring its ramifications on a range of diverse areas. Amongst other these include aspects that relate to labour market outcomes, gender dynamics, industrialisation, and the key macroeconomic objectives of sub-Saharan African economies.</p> <p>During the course of his academic career, he has authored over 30 research articles in international and local peer-reviewed publications. He also serves as critical reviewer for a number of accredited journals and publication houses. He has contributed to two international conferences: ICESS 2017 and ICEBSS 2018. Dr Montshiwas is a recipient of the NWU Emerging Teaching Excellence Award (ETEA) for the year 2017-2018. This research addresses a variety of issues of which the most important include: the effectiveness of the market, uncertainty in asset prices, the impact of different world markets on each other as well as how these factors influence investors’ asset portfolios.<br /><br /> Although this field of research has always been important, the financial crisis of 2007/8 again drew researchers’ attention to this field. In 2004 and 2007 he was honoured by the university for his exemplary teaching.</span></p> <p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="display: inline; margin-top: 0;">Waldo’s research interests focus on development issues and the outputs can be grouped into two broad strands: Geographical Economics and Tourism Economics.  In total he has authored and co-authored 43 conference papers, four working papers, 24 journal articles and eight chapters in refereed books and four chapters in a textbook.  In November 2009 he received the National Research Foundation’s Y2 rating as a young researcher.</span></p> <p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="display: inline; margin-top: 0;">As programme leader in Economics he is part of the management team of the School of Economics and a member of the council of the Faculty. Waldo serves on the council of the Economic History Society of Southern Africa and the Board of Economic Research Southern Africa.</span></p> <p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="display: inline; margin-top: 0;"><strong>Summary of research</strong></span></p> <p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="display: inline; margin-top: 0;">Waldo’s research is focussed in two broad strands: The location of economic activities, specifically the growth of cities and towns in South Africa and Tourism Economics.</span></p> <p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="display: inline; margin-top: 0;">The research into geographical economics and spatial economic growth follows from his PhD thesis.  Waldo has focussed on empirical tests of geographical economics and the determinants of spatial economic growth.  In 2009 he has started to work on firm-level data with the focus on issues of location and agglomeration.</span></p> <p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="display: inline; margin-top: 0;">His Tourism Economics work takes place in the research area: Tourism Research in Economics, Environs and Society (TREES). The work comprises of analysis of the spending profile of tourists and lately, the economics of sustainable or green tourism.</span></p> <p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="display: inline; margin-top: 0;">Along with his own research Waldo has undertaken supervision of post-graduate students.  Since 2004 thirteen master’s degree students have completed dissertations under his supervision and he was a co-supervisor for three other students.
