In 2004 he obtained a PhD in General Theory of Literature at the North-West University.</p> <p>Mainly active in the field of Comparative Literature, his research focuses on rhetorical constructions and relationality in Afrikaans, South African and Dutch prose and poetry, with emphasis on the writings of Eben Venter.</p> <p>He delivered papers at conferences in South Africa, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland and the USA, and published articles in accredited journals, including Dutch Crossing, Critical Arts, Journal of Humanities, Stilet, Literator, Tydskrif vir Nederlands en Afrikaans, South African Journal of Linguistics. He contributed chapters to books such as: Perspektief en profiel; Verbintenis en venster: die Nederlandstalige letterkunde van aanvang tot hede; Crossing Borders, Dissolving Boundaries (2013); Beyond the Threshold: Explorations of Liminality in Literature (2007); and Shifting the Compass: Pluricontinental Connections in Dutch Colonial and Postcolonial Literature (2013).</p> <p>He first obtained an NRF rating in 2014, and in 2019 his rating was successfully renewed (C2). In the same year he was awarded the South African Academy’s Esther Greeff prize for a Journal of Humanities article (2017) in which he re-evaluates the novel Wolf, wolf in the context of Eben Venter’s oeuvre.</p> <p>Prof Van Schalkwyk has been promoter and supervisor at NWU for several successfully completed postgraduate studies. He is considered an authority in particularly the fields of academic literacies and language testing – all focus areas under the broad theme of language for specific purposes within applied linguistics. Apart from his research, he is also node manager in the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR) and director in the Inter-institutional Centre for Language Development and Assessment (ICELDA). These two entities contribute extensively towards applied linguistic product development, and research and innovation. The former includes development of academic support materials in writing specifically, multilingual resource development such as academic wordlists, tests and educational videos, games that advance multilingualism, and the development of a multi-level, multi-genre, multilingual learner corpus of academic writing. The latter includes a focus on academic articles, academic books and textbooks, as well as postgraduate supervision. She specializes in syntax and semantics, with a particular focus on the grammaticalisation of tense and aspect constructions in Afrikaans and Dutch. She completed five degrees at the NWU, namely a degree in Business Communication (B.Bk. – 2005), a degree in Theology with languages (B.Th. Languages – 2005), an Honours degree in Afrikaans Linguistics (B.A. Hons. – 2007), a Master's degree Afrikaans Literature (M.A. – 2007) and her PhD in Afrikaans Linguistics in 2012. He is currently also the chairperson of the <em>Afrikaanse Taalraad</em>, chairperson of the <em>Suid Afrikaanse Akademie van Kuns en Kultuur</em>, chairperson of the <em>Nasionale Taalligaam vir Afrikaans</em> and also serves on a variety of boards. He is, amongst others, also a member of the panel of translators for the new Afrikaans Bible translation.</p> <!--break--> <p>He was one of the founder collaborators of the collection of Afrikaans poetry that is housed in the Poëzie centrum in Gent, Belgium, and is also leader of a project that established a digital library on Afrikaans language sources (DBAT). He is a graded researcher of the National Research Foundation (NNS/NRF) in South Africa and also participates regularly in radio and television programmes on language matters.</p> <p>Carstens regularly acts as selector of articles in subject magazines and he himself also published in a variety of fields. He already published two independent books (<em>Norme vir Afrikaans</em>, 1989, 1991, 1994, 2002, 2011) as well as <em>Afrikaanse tekslinguistiek</em>, 1997) and is also co-author of a book titled <em>Teksredaksie</em> (with Prof Kris van de Poel of the University of Antwerp; 2010, 2012). An English version of this book has just been published as: Text editing. A handbook for students and practitioners (Antwerp, University Press Antwerp – Kris van de Poel, WAM Carstens &amp; John Linnegar).</p> <p>He is also co-author of the ninth edition of the <em>Afrikaanse Woordelys en Spelreëls</em> (2002), the leading and directive publication on spelling in Afrikaans. As member of the <em>Taalkommissie</em> (Language Commission) he is also the co-recipient of the CJ Langenhoven Prize for Language Science from the SA Academy of Science and Art, and he also received an <em>ATKV Woordwyser</em> award for his book <em>Norme vir Afrikaans </em>(4th edition 2003). The fifth revised edition of this book was published in May 2011 and is widely prescribed to universities in SA.</p> <p>Carstens has already published 33 academic articles as well as numerous popular articles.
