His research focuses mostly on construction grammar (specifically Afrikaans morphology, and swearing in Afrikaans), with application in language standardization, and the development of human language technology (HLT) resources and applications for (mainly) Afrikaans. He served on the Language Commission of the South African Academy for Science and the Arts from 2005-2021, and was elected chair from 2013-2021. From 2009-2014 he served on the panel of human language technology experts of the Department of Arts and Culture. He is the recipient of the Elizabeth Eybers Scholarship, the CL Engelbrecht Prize for Linguistic Research for his contribution to the publication of the tenth edition of the "Afrikaanse woordelys en spelreëls", and the recipient of the Stals Prize for inter- and multidisciplinary research. Ilse started her career at the University of Cape Town and in 1999 she received the Stichting Studiefonds voor Zuid Afrikaanse Studenten Studiebeurs to conduct research for her MA-thesis at Leiden University. In 2000 she returned from the Netherlands to enrol for a PhD. Resuming contract teaching at the University of Cape Town between 2000 and 2004, she received the Nuffic-scholarship for research at the Radboudt University, Nijmegen, in the Netherlands in 2004. After completing her PhD, Ilse spent the next few years teaching at the Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza in Poland, the film school, AFDA, and UNISA. In 2011, she joined Oxford University Press as Development Editor in Higher Education.</p> <p>After publishing the first Afrikaans translation of the classic text, the Kama Sutra, in 2013 (as Afrikamasutra), she won the UNISA Hiddingh Currie Award for Academic Excellence in 2014. In 2014 she returned to UCT where she completed a PGDip in Higher Education whilst lecturing at the Graduate School of Business and in the Faculty of Health Sciences. The year 2015 not only saw the birth of her son, but also the birth of her first Afrikaans chick-lit novel, Die Jaar toe Emma begin kook het. Early in 2016, Ilse was appointed as head of Afrikaans and Dutch at Rhodes University. Finally, in 2018, she took up a position as senior lecturer of Afrikaans literature at Northwest University, where her leadership abilities came to the fore again as head of the Vanderbijlpark campus section of Afrikaans and Dutch since 2019. She is a member of the Afrikaanse Letterkunde Vereeniging and Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns. She was appointed in January of 2015. She held a similar position at the University of Johannesburg during 2012 and 2013. She completed BA and BA Honours degrees Masters in Afrikaans and Dutch literature. She obtained a Master’s Degree (Cum Laude) in Afrikaans and Dutch Literature form the North-West University with a dissertation on cognitive narratology, friendship and eudaimonia in Die sneeuslaper (The snowsleeper) by Marlene van Niekerk. For this she received the Marius Jooste-medal for best MA-dissertation completed in the Subject Group Afrikaans and Dutch during 2014. Her PhD thesis (2018) in Linguistics and Literary Theory focussed on metamodernism, performativity and relationality in the oeuvre of Marlene van Niekerk. Her research interests include Afrikaans and Dutch poetry and prose, literary theory, comparative literature, post-postmodernism, posthumanism and postcritical reading strategies. In 2019 Linde spent 3 months in Antwerp, Belgium lecturing a Master-level course on Afrikaans literature. Linde has served on the review committee for the UJ Literary Prize, as well as on the executive committees of LASA (the Literary Association of South Africa) and of the ALV (the Afrikaans Literary Association) of which she is currently the secretary. Her research interest was primarily focused on the role teachers play in teaching and supporting all learners in inclusive classrooms, but recently it broadened to inclusivity and diversity in different environments. She was the South African project leader for an international collaborative research project between South Africa, England, Finland, China, Lithuania and Slovenia with the topic: A Comparative Analysis of Teachers’ Roles in Inclusive Education. Several publications resulted from this project. In 2016 she and other NWU colleagues were rewarded European Union funding to conduct research on teacher education for inclusion in collaboration with De Vlaamse Vereniging voor Ontwikkelingssamenwerking en Technische Bijstand (VVOB), the Universities of the Witwatersrand, Free State, Fort Hare and Inclusive Education South Africa (IESA). She was also involved with NWU colleagues in a research project aiming at developing High Performance Learning in an inclusive Full-Service <span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="line-height:115%"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><span style="line-height:115%">School. Furthermore, in collaboration with Austrian and German colleagues, she was also part of a project focusing on the social participation of learners in inclusive Full Service Schools in South Africa. She has published several articles in national and in international journals, written numerous chapters, co-edited and sole edited textbooks, and supervised and delivered Masters and PhD students. Conference papers were presented at national and international conferences. She completed her PhD in Linguistics and Literary Theory in 2018, which focused on reconsidering traditional theories of ethnolinguistic vitality, from a sub-cultural, sociolinguistic perspective. She holds a D. Litt. et Phil. from the University of South Africa, Pretoria. Her dissertation investigated sign language interpreting on television using questionnaires, focus groups, eye-tracking analysis and corpus analysis. She has developed an annotation system for text-based signed language corpus research and has created the first sign language interpreting corpus. She further developed the Descriptive Translation Model in Translation Studies to include a grounded theory approach. Her research interests include sign language interpreting, theoretical models of translation and interpretation, process-oriented studies, children’s literature, eye-tracking and corpus linguistics. She also has experience with using eye-tracking studies for usability of mobile devices, web-page development, reading education, subtitle development and investigating sign language discourse markers. Coming from a background in education, she maintains an interest in children’s development of learning and reading skills.
