Prof Le Roux is an Associate Professor in the field of Human Physiology, appointed at the North-West University since February 2014. She teaches and supervises undergraduate and postgraduate students and performs research as part of the Hypertension in Africa Research Team (HART) at the South African Medical Research Council: Unit for Hypertension and Cardiovascular Disease at the North-West University.

Prof Le Roux completed her BSc degree in Biological Sciences in 2009, BSc Hons in Physiology in 2010, MSc in Physiology in 2011 and PhD in Physiology in May 2015. Her PhD thesis focussed on the association of vascular inflammation with lifestyle and cardiometabolic risk factors, which may play a role in the development of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, and whether inflammation can predict cardiovascular mortality among the black South African population, already double burdened by a high prevalence of hypertension and HIV. In 2016, Prof Le Roux visited the British Heart Foundation Cardiovascular Research Centre at Glasgow University, Scotland as a post-doctoral research fellow where she investigated the effect of the Glasgow and Clyde Weight Management Service programme (2003-2015) on the cardiometabolic profile of more than 4000 diabetic patients.

As an emerging researcher, Prof Le Roux conducts research in several research studies, including the African-PREDICT study, PURE-SA study, SABPA study, ExAMIN Youth SA study and EndoAfrica study (of which she is the principal investigator). She is trained to perform several cardiovascular measurements and statistical analyses. She obtained National Research Foundation (NRF) rating in the Y2 category in November 2020 and received the Teaching Excellence Award in February 2021. In her work, she aims to obtain first-hand knowledge from experts in her field, to build a network with future collaborators with whom she can contribute to her research field, as well as to teach and inspire students to become future health scientists.

Prof Yolandi Breet is an associate professor and researcher in the field of Cardiovascular physiology and is also the subject leader of Physiology. Her research focuses on factors leading to the development of hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Her specific interests include large artery stiffness and early vascular aging. Salome Kruger is a registered dietitian and pharmacist and Professor of Nutrition at the Centre of Excellence for Nutrition, North-West University. As member of consultative groups to the South African Department of Health she had the opportunity to advise on national policy. She is a member of an African working group on anthropometric factors and cardiometabolic disease (African Partnership for Chronic Disease Research, APCDR) and the Global Burden of Metabolic Risk Factors of Chronic Diseases Collaborating Group, a worldwide network of clinical and public health researchers and practitioners with focus on analysing worldwide trends and health effects of cardiometabolic risk factors. She is a Deputy Editor of the international scientific journal, Public Health Nutrition and member of the Academy of Science of South Africa her current NRF rating is C1 and she is a Fellow of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences.

She received awards for best publications and conference presentations, including the John M Kinney award for the best publication in pediatric nutrition in the journal, Nutrition in 2005, the ICAO-Lilly award at the International Congress on Abdominal Obesity, Quebec City, Canada in 2012, the Nutrition Society of South Africa award for nutrition research in South Africa, 2014, the Unilever award for best presentation by a senior scientist at the South African Nutrition Congress in 2014 and for second best presentation in 2016.

Prof HW Huisman performs his research in the field of cardiovascular physiology, especially on factors related to changes in vascular structure and function in the development of hypertension. Although the research is mainly done in low socio-economic communities of South Africa this work also contributes to the existing body of knowledge regarding vascular dysfunction, arterial stiffness and early vascular aging. This also implicates the influence of vascular peptides, hormones, enzymes, oxidative stress, inflammation and other markers associated with cardiovascular disease under different circumstances like obesity, urbanization and aging.

Annchen Mielmann graduated with a Ph.D. in Food Science from the University of the Free State (UFS), Bloemfontein (2014). She is an Associate Professor (Food) in the Faculty of Health Sciences, Potchefstroom. In 2017, she received the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship for postdoctoral studies at the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH-HAFL) in Switzerland. In 2019, she received an Y2 rating from the National Research Foundation (NRF). In 2023 Annchen received a Research Scholarship to complete her research at the University of Goettingen, Germany in 2024. From 2023 she acts as a guest editor for a special issue on Sustainable Food Systems for the South African Journal of Science and she also received the NWU Faculty of Health Sciences Teaching Award. Annchen is registered as a Natural Scientist at the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) and is a member of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST), South African Association of Dairy Technology (SASDT) and South African Association of Family Ecology and Consumer Sciences (SAAFECS). Her research focus on consumers' food choices in a specific context to strive for sustainable food consumption.
