Julia Blitz is a registered Family Physician who has a PhD in Health Professions Education (HPE) from Stellenbosch University. While now retired from full-time work, she continues to work with some South African medical schools (including NWU) as they develop or renew their medical programmes.

She was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners (UK) in recognition of her “major contribution internationally to both undergraduate education and postgraduate training in the context of Family Medicine”.

Julia continues to teach on Masters degrees in Health Professions Education in South Africa, Malawi and Ireland, including research supervision. She has a number of publications in the discipline of HPE, including with international colleagues.

I served as a Family Medicine specialist in the public health sector, translating to a senior health system leader for 30 years. The last 5 years I served as Head of Health for the Western Cape, accountable for all health services, resources and performance. Included in the responsibilities was to manage the relationship and interface between the Health Department and 4 Western Cape HEIs (UCT, UWC, CPUT, SU). Dr Xander Flemming is a lecturer and researcher at the Africa Unit for Transdisciplinary Health Research (AUTHeR). After obtaining a master’s degree in counselling psychology, he gained over 12 years of experience in community settings. He managed and implemented mental health and psycho-social well-being programs and sexual health and HIV/STI prevention programs for marginalised groups in resource-limited settings in South Africa. He has worked at a national level and across various sectors, including public health, health promotion, the NGO/CBO sector and corporate social investment. He has collaborated with NGOs/CBOs, grassroots organisations, international and national funders, and government departments, such as the Department of Health (national, provincial and district levels). He worked as a lecturer in the Psychology subject group at the North-West University from 2019 to 2023. He holds a PhD in Transdisciplinary Health Sciences. He has supervised postgraduate students in Psychology and Positive Psychology. His research focus area includes strengths-based approaches to MSM well-being, mental health promotion, and transdisciplinary and community-integrated research. He has a keen interest in qualitative research approaches.

During the period 2009-2013 I was head of the biostatistics Unit and responsible for clinical epidemiology in two main research hospital in Milan (Italy). Afterwards, during the period the period 2013-2015, I joined the department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine of the University of Regensburg (Germany). In 2015-2016 I joined the Nutritional Methodology and Biostatistics Group at the International Agency for Research on Cancer of the World Health Organization in Lyon (France). During the Period 2016-2019 I was postdoctoral researched at the Centre of Excellence for Nutrition (CEN) of the North-West University in Potchefstroom(South Africa) being involved as scientist also at the department of Statistics (faculty of naturalsciences) and being involved as statistician at the health research Ethic committee (HREC). During the period 2019-2021, I was appointed as researched at the University of Leipzig (Germany), Faculty of Medicine, department of Paediatrics. Currently, I am associate professor at the Africa Unit for Transdisciplinary Health Research (AUTHER) of the North-West University, faculty of health (South Africa). During my work experience I applied biostatistics methods to many different fields of Medicine and bioscience, and I developed specific knowledge in multivariate space reduction techniques, statistical modelling, variable selection, power analysis, meta-analysis and meta-regression, non-parametric modelling and analysis, statistical methods for clinical trials and epidemiological studies (time to event analysis, competing risk analysis, multi-state modelling, etc…). I have specific knowledge of the most common software for statistical analysis and advanced programming skills using SAS (data management, macro language, procedures), STATA (data-management, various functions, meta-analysis, and meta-regression), and R (various packages). During my scientific activity I contributed with more than 150 papers published on scientific peer reviewed journals and I accumulated an H-index above 30. My specialized area of expertise is about chronic disease and cardiovascular epidemiology

Tamrin Veldsman is a lecturer, and emerging expert, in the School of Human Movement Sciences in the Subject Group: Biokinetics at the North-West University (Potchefstroom Campus) in South Africa. Tamrin is a registered biokineiticist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and serves as the chairperson for the North-West Biokinetics Association of South Africa (BASA) committee. Prof Nkengafac Villyen Motaze (M.D, M.Sc., PhD) is a Cameroonian medical epidemiologist currently based at Medicine Usage in South Africa (MUSA). In 2007, Villyen completed his medical studies in Yaoundé, Cameroon and worked for four years in the North West province of Cameroon before moving to Cape Town in 2012 where he completed his masters in Clinical Epidemiology at Stellenbosch University. He Joined the Center for Vaccines and Immunology at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) in 2014 where he carried out several surveillance and research projects on vaccine-preventable diseases including measles, poliomyelitis, rubella, and viral hepatitis. Villyen enrolled for his PhD in Epidemiology with Stellenbosch University in 2016 and focused on rubella and congenital rubella syndrome in South Africa.

Villyen currently supervises postgraduate (masers and doctoral) students, conducts systematic reviews of healthcare interventions and facilitates training on systematic reviews and Evidence-Based Practice in partnership with the Centre for Evidence-Based Health Care/Stellenbosch University and Cochrane South Africa/ South African Medical Research Council. Villyen was deployed twice as a Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) consultant with the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Villyen’s areas of interest include pharmacoepidemiology, public health, infectious diseases, vaccine preventable diseases, child health and reproductive health. He has a passion for training of post-graduate students and is supervising masters students at Stellenbosch University, University of Pretoria and the University of the Witwatersrand. He has twenty peer-reviewed publications in accredited scientific journals and is a member of the Scientific advisory committee of the South African Field Epidemiology Training Program.

Professor Lusilda Schutte is an Associate Professor at the Africa Unit for Transdisciplinary Health Research of the North-West University and a registered and practicing Clinical Psychologist.

Building on a Bachelor’s degree with Mathematics, Statistics, and Psychology as majors, Prof Schutte holds a Doctoral degree in Psychology from the North-West University, South Africa, and Master’s degrees in both Clinical Psychology and Statistics.

Her research falls in the domain of public mental health and psychiatric epidemiology, with mental health conceptualised on the full spectrum from ill-being to well-being. She has a specific interest in the social determinants of mental health, and in developing a complex understanding of mental health prevalence, trajectories, determinants, and correlates in low resource settings, which ultimately feeds into developing context-sensitive and relevant policy and interventions.

She was a recipient of the Bronze Medal Award for Outstanding Scientific Contributions to Health Research from the South African Medical Research Council in 2023, received a Y1 rating from the National Research Foundation (NRF) in 2022, and was the recipient of the Emerging Scientist Award of the Psychological Society of South Africa’s Division for Research and Methodology in 2019. She held an NRF Thuthuka grant from 2020 to 2022 and receives research funding in the South African Medical Research Council’s Early Investigators Programme from a project from 2022 to 2026. Prof Schutte was the lead editor of a 2022 Springer volume titled “Embracing well-being in diverse African contexts: Research perspectives”. She was invited to convene an Invited Symposium at the International Congress of Psychology in 2021 and was invited to present in the “Showcasing Early Career Researchers Invited Symposium” at the 6th World Congress of Positive Psychology in Melbourne, Australia, in 2019.

In 2004, Markus Depfenhart completed his medical studies and received his doctorate from the JWG University in Frankfurt am Main in 2005. He later underwent further studies in other subjects and so he now also holds a LL.M. in economic law and a PhD in business and economics. Among others he developed an algorithm for legal patent circumvention.

After numerous theoretical and practical training courses, he qualified as board certified emergency physician in 2008 and worked as an emergency physician in Hamburg, but also in crisis regions such as the Balkans and Afghanistan. Since 2014, he has been a board certified specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery. Due to numerous stays abroad, for example in Greece, South Africa and the USA, Markus Depfenhart can demonstrate international experience in various specialties and is also constantly educating himself in this country. He is a also an expert for skin and skincare realetd topics and of his major focusses is now peptide and protein design. In 2018 Markus Depfenhart has been appointed as professor for aesthetic and regenerative medicine at the Venlo University/ NL. Since 2020 he is also lecturing at the FOM University of Applied Science in Hamburg/ Germany. He also works as a consultant for the industry and has a seat on the advisory board of various national and international companies. He is currently a member of the board of Lavenir Bioscience AG (Hamburg) and the Optiphi AG (Switzerland). Markus Depfenhart holds more than 30 patents and patent applications in different fields.

I study the relationships between physiochemical properties of drugs, their formulations and the effects on pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. I work interdisciplinary and integrate chemistry, molecular biology, biochemistry and molecular toxicology in my research. I am actively engaged in various areas of pharmaceutics including biochemical, cellular and whole-animal models, with a focus on infectious diseases and cancer. My specific strengths are in the understanding of the molecular and cellular determinants of formulations, the development of polymeric and lipid based nanoparticulate formulations and molecular mechanisms whereby ingredients exert their toxic effects on living organisms. Principle contributions include 1) Proved enhanced absorption of therapeutic peptides by polymer and lipid based drug delivery to enhance; 2) Developed polymer drug delivery systems for infectious diseases; 3) Optimised lipid based delivery systems in delivery of drugs for infectious diseases and cancer. We made significant contributions in the practical development of treatments specifically for infectious diseases.

The research focus of HART is the identification of early markers for the development of hypertension, and ultimately the prevention of cardiovascular disease in the black South African population. She has published over 250 papers on the topic of hypertension, and supervised over 85 postgraduate students. She has been acknowledged for her work as the winner of the Distinguished Woman Scientist in the Natural, Engineering and Life Sciences award, presented by the South African Department of Science and Technology in 2017; the NSTF South 32 TW Kambule Award (2016/2017); the British Association Medal from the Southern Africa Association for the Advancement of Science (S2A3). She was also the recipient of the Meiring Naude Medal from the Royal Society of South Africa, the AU-TWAS (African Union & The World Academy of Sciences) Award, and the 2018 African Union Kwame Nkrumah Regional Award for Scientific Excellence.

She serves as Editor of the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology and on the Editorial Board of established cardiovascular journals, such as Hypertension, the Journal of Hypertension, Journal of Clinical Hypertension, Journal of Human Hypertension, Current Hypertension Reports and Current Obesity Reports. She is one of 20 founding members of the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS); Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and the Royal Society of South Africa; the Past President of the Southern African Hypertension Society (SAHS); and President of the International Society of Hypertension (ISH).
