Prof Rupert Gouws is presently a full professor in the School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering at the North-West University (NWU), Potchefstroom. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. After completion of his studies, he joined a company Energy Cybernetics where he was involved with energy audits, measurement and verification activities and energy related research activities. He received an Institutional Teaching Excellence Award from the NWU and was involved in various undergraduate modules for all year groups. Apart from lecturing, he also mentors students that are busy with their Master’s studies, PhD studies and Postdoctoral fellowships. He specialises in the fields of electrical energy management, electrical energy efficiency, electrical machines - energy optimization, and power electronics - energy optimization. He currently has a National Research Foundation (NRF) rating status of Established Researcher. He has authored and co-authored more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed international journals and peer-reviewed international conference proceedings. He received awards for the most productive junior and senior researcher within the NWU Faculty of Engineering. He is active on research evaluation panels for various international journals and serve as external examiner for various institutions. He has an established network of partners within the university, local industries, and international collaborators. He acted as a member of the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Engineering at the NWU as well as a member of the Research Entities Evaluation Committee of the NWU. The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) registered him as a Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) and the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) certified him as a Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP). Furthermore, he holds membership with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE).

Etienne Barnard obtained his Ph. D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1989, writing his thesis on “Neural Networks for Scene Analysis”. He has since then been active in research and development in pattern recognition and speech processing. He has held a number of academic positions, and has also worked in industry. Barnard has co-authored more than 250 refereed scientific publications, on topics including pattern recognition, neural networks, speech recognition and human-computer interaction. He holds a number of international patents in speech processing and is a past Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks. Barnard’s research contributions have been recognized in various ways, including Google Research Awards in 2009, 2011 and 2014; he is currently Research Professor at the North-West University.

Marelie Davel is a Research Professor at North-West University (NWU), specialising in machine learning and the data-driven modelling of speech and language. Her current research focuses on generalisation in deep learning.

For the past two decades, Prof. Davel has been actively involved in technology-oriented R&D, initially as an electronic engineer at the South African CSIR, and later (2004) as principal researcher and the research group leader of the Human Language Technologies (HLT) research group at the same institution. She studied at the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa), University of London (UK) and Carnegie Mellon University (USA), receiving her PhD from the University of Pretoria (South Africa), with a thesis on bootstrapping pronunciation models; at the time, one of the core missing components when developing speech technology in under-resourced environments.

She joined NWU in 2011 and became the director of MuST in 2014. Consisting mainly of a small team of full-time researchers, MuST is an externally-focussed, project-oriented research environment. Recent projects include the development of an automatic speech transcription platform for the South African government, development of a new multilingual text-to-speech corpus in collaboration with Google, and participation in the BABEL project: a 5-year internationally collaborative challenge aimed at solving the spoken term detection task for under-resourced languages.

Prof. Davel performs independent research, supervises postgraduate students and consults for clients from government and industry. She has published 90 peer-reviewed papers in fields related to machine learning and its applications. She is a node representative of the South African national Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research (CAIR), and an NRF-rated researcher.

Professor Bunt obtained his PhD in the field of Chemical Engineering (fixed-bed coal gasification) at the North-West University in 2006. During the last 35 years Professor Bunt’s research interests have ranged widely from: base metals, platinum group metal refining, mining chemicals, ash mineralogy, and more recently, coal beneficiation and fixed-bed gasification. Professor Bunt was seconded by Sasol Technology R+D to the North-West University in 2009 in order to assist in the development of capacity at the university in the field of coal science and technology under the Sasol-Hub-and-Spoke University collaboration drive. In 2011, Professor Bunt achieved the NRF rating status of Established Researcher, and was appointed as SARChI chair holder in 2013. In 2015 he was appointed as Full Professor at the North-West University after taking early retirement from Sasol (26 years of service). Professor Bunt acts on a regular basis as reviewer for high impact factor international scientific journals and has supervised 13 PhD and 25 Masters students in the area of clean coal science and technology. Professor Bunt has been accredited with over 100 publications which have been published in reputable journals and presented at conferences all over the world. The main thrust of the coal research programme at the NWU ranges from molecular modelling of coal structures (nano-scale), to reactivity/kinetic studies (micron-scale), and to lump coal pyrolysis and gasification studies (mm scale).2

Dr Branken obtained his PhD in the field of membrane-based gas separation from the North-west University (South Africa) in 2013, after obtaining his MSc in the field of crystallization in 2009. During his post-graduate studies, Dr. Branken has gained knowledge in the field of general fluorine chemistry, as well as expertise in both “wet” and “dry” processing methods relating to the fluorine industry. Throughout his post graduate studies, and subsequent professional career, Dr. Branken’s research interests have been focused around applied chemistry and chemical engineering disciplines such as separation and purification technologies, molecular modelling (DFT and semi-empirical), molecular dynamics simulations, thermodynamics, statistical thermodynamics, and more recently computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling, reaction kinetics, electrostatics and emissions control. After completion of his PhD, Dr. Branken was appointed as lecturer in chemical Thermodynamics I and II at the School of Chemical and Minerals Engineering in May 2013, and has subsequently been promoted to senior lecturer, starting in 2015. He is currently involved in emissions control research within the Eskom-EPPEI Chair at NWU. This entails post-combustion flue gas treatment, i.e. flue gas desulfurization (wet, dry and semi-dry methods), particulate matter abatement using electrostatic precipitation and fabric filtration technologies, and CO₂ capture using dry solid sorbents. Currently, Dr. Branken (co)supervises 2 PhD students, and 7 master’s students.

Early research outputs (2001 - 2008) relates on the Technology-enabled Optimization of Learning Management Systems.
Research outputs related to this theme include 5 peer reviewed journal articles (2 international, 5 local ISI-listed and 1 local non-
ISI-listed), as well as 5 peer reviewed publications in proceedings of international conferences.
In 2009 she became involved with the South African Medical Research Council (MRC)'s telemedicine research projects.
Telemedicine is the delivery of health care services (-medicine) over a distance (tele-), enabled by technology. I eventually
developed a Telemedicine Service Maturity Model for purposes of my PhD. GSMA (Groupe Speciale Mobile Association) Health
Directorate adopted this model for their "mHealth Service Maturity Tracking System".

She was member of the organizing committee, responsible for the academic programme of the 1st (2010), 2nd (2011) and 3rd (2012)
South African Telemedicine Conferences and the 16th Conference of the International Society for Telemedicine and eHealth
(2012) as well as peer reviewer for three different international conferences related to Telemedicine, namely (1) the
International Conference on eHealth, Telemedicine, and Social Medicine; (2) the International eHealth, Telemedicine and Health
ICT Conference and (3) 3rd International Conference on Global Telehealth.

She also – in collaboration with the Medical Research Council - developed and presented post-academic courses on telemedicine
and ehealth to healthcare professionals from seven of the nine Provincial Departments of Health of South Africa.

I have been involved with Mössbauer spectroscopy technology since 1991 at the then PU for CHE, currently the North-West University’s Potchefstroom Campus, which entails the application of mineral and mineral studies. Several publications in international journals and conference presentations flowed from this work.

Since my research is mainly focused on coal, it was decided to use the Mössbauer technique at the North-West University’s Potchefstroom Campus as well. By launching an investigation into the iron-bearing minerals in coal, various deductions can be made regarding the changes that the coal undergoes during weathering, gassing or burning.

Another mineralogical project that is done for mining institutions entails the identification of minerals and their change or transformation in lye processes or reduction processes. By means of Mössbauer analyses can be established which changes sulphite ore undergoes for the recovery of the base metals from the ore. The Mössbauer technique is unique in the sense that the different states of the iron show ion in the mineral, which in turn can be used to identify optimal mineral processing processes.

There is cooperation with several universities in the country as well as industry partners, which ensure that the Mössbauer technique is not just applied at the North-West University, but that other institutions can also make use of this facility. At the recently held ISIAME conference (International Symposium on the Industrial Application of the Mössbauer Effect) it was decided to host this quadrennial conference in South Africa, and I will act as organiser of this conference.
