Michelle Pretorius is a South African singer, actress, researcher and lecturer. She is currently a Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Commercial Music at the School of Music at NWU. Michelle holds a BMus from the University of Pretoria, an MMus from the South African College of Music, a MA Musical Theatre from the Guildford School of Acting in the UK, and a PhD in Musicology from Wits University. She is a passionate researcher within the studies of theatre, audience, celebrity and fandom. In 2024 Michelle also did a TEDx talk at the University of Chester in the UK.

Michelle’s performance and direction credits include Sister Act the musical at Joburg Theatre in 2015, the role of Urusla the Sea Witch in the production of The Little Mermaid at the People's Theatre in Johannesburg in 2015 for which she received a nomination for a Naledi Award for best actress in a children's musical. The Afrikaans Pantomime, Sneeuwitjie, at the Marcealous Theatre at Emporers Palace in Johannesburg in 2016.

After relocating to the United Kingdom Shelly took part in the development of a new musical, The Crocodile of Old Kang Pow, with Bunker Theatre Productions in London, in the workshop as the of role of Momolow in 2017. In 2021 Shelly performed in South African Stories Through Song at the Ludlow Fringe Festival.

As a director, Shelly directed Carrie the Musical, Ruthless the Musical and her own song cycle UnSeen at the Walker Theatre in Shrewsbury in the UK between the years of 2022 and 2024. She also directed and performed in Fred the Musical, a new work, at the Liverpool Theatre festival in 2023. Furthermore, Shelly performed in her own musical song cycle, UnSeen (for which she is lyricist and book writer), at the Arena Theatre in Wolverhampton for the LEAP Festival.

Jaco Meyer is a South African composer, researcher, and lecturer in Composition and Musicology at the School of Music and Conservatory of North-West University (NWU). He earned his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Hannes Taljaard, focusing on expanding Steve Larson’s Theory of Musical Forces through an analysis of Wim Henderickx’s Ragas. He also holds a Fellowship from Trinity College London(FTCL) in Composition and a Master’s in Positive Psychology (MAPP) from NWU. In recognition of his significant contributions as a composer, he was awarded an Honorary Medal by the South African Academy for Science and Arts. An NRF-rated scholar, Meyer’s research is frequently presented at local and international conferences and published in accredited academic journals. His work spans music analysis, the expansion of theoretical frameworks, and the promotion of well-being among music educators. As a composer, his music has been performed by renowned soloists and ensembles worldwide. He is particularly known for his conceptual interpretations of artworks and interdisciplinary collaborations with visual artists and sculptors. Ewie Erasmus is an associate professor in music education at the North-West University School of Music and is affiliated with the Musical Arts in South Africa: Resources and Applications (MASARA) focus area. Piet Koornhof has more than four decades of experience as professional violinist, ensemble player and teacher. He studied with Susan Sauerman, Alan Solomon and later with Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School in New York. He founded the South African Chamber Music Society in 1986 which presented top South African chamber music performers in concerts and international recordings. Pianist and educator Tinus Botha has been the recipient of several awards, including the silver medal at the Hennie Joubert Piano Competition in Wellington, the UNISA South African Music Scholarship, Unisa’s DJ Roode Overseas Scholarship, and the Gertrude Buchanan Prize. He was a finalist and prize winner in the first Nederburg South African National Piano Competition. During his undergraduate studies, he completed three licentiates – teacher’s and performer’s licentiates from Unisa, as well as a performer’s licentiate from Trinity College.

He has had master classes with renowned professors such as Dorian Leljak, Andzrej Jasinski, Maria Gineva, Gustavo Romero, Timothy Ehlen, Martino Tirimo, Fabio Bidini, Russell Sherman, and Zhou Guangren, among others. He is an alumnus of the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California, where he studied with Jerome Lowenthal. In January 2000 he moved to Fort Worth, Texas to pursue postgraduate studies under the tutelage of José Feghali and Harold Martina at Texas Christian University. During this time, he held a graduate assistantship, and received the Lili Kraus award from TCU. He graduated with an MMus in May 2003. In April 2008, his formal studies were concluded with the conferral of the DMus (Performing Arts) degree by the University of Pretoria under the guidance of Joseph Stanford.

He performs widely as soloist, collaborator, and chamber musician, and has appeared in many cities in South Africa, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe. He has been an adjudicator at several major national music competitions and acts as external examiner for various South African universities.

Tinus is currently associate professor of piano at North-West University in Potchefstroom, as well as co-president of the South African chapter of the World Piano Teachers Association. He was appointed as editor of The South African Music Teacher in July 2018, and his essays have been published in the SAMT, Clavier Companion, Piano Magazine, and The Piano Journal.

Chris van Rhyn holds the degrees BMus, BMus (Honours) (Composition), MMus (Composition) and PhD (Music) from Stellenbosch University. He teaches Music Theory at North-West University’s School of Music and is the Director of the Research Focus Area Musical Arts in South Africa: Resources and Applications (MASARA). His research focuses on the works of art music composers from Anglophone Africa, especially those of the British-South African composer Priaulx Rainier. Chris is also engaged in artistic (practice-based and -led) research in Composition.

Chris has presented research papers at conferences in South Africa, Serbia, Ireland, Chile, the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany. He has published articles and reviews in South African Music Studies, Musicus, Critical Arts: South-North Cultural and Media Studies, Musicology Australia, Perspectives of New Music, the Österreichische Musikzeitschrift and the World New Music Magazine, and a book chapter in Ritualised Belonging: Musicing and Spirituality in the South African Context (Peter Lang Verlag).

Chris’s compositions have been performed locally and abroad, including Harvard University’s Paine Hall in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and at the World New Music Days in Johannesburg. He has been a visiting lecturer at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, and has presented guest lectures at the University of Lincoln (UK) and the University of Malawi (Zomba). Chris represented NewMusicSA, the South African chapter of the International Society for Contemporary Music, as a delegate at their annual assemblies in Kosice, Bratislava and Vienna (2013) and Wroclaw (2014). He served as editor of NewMusicSA’s Bulletin from 2010-2015. Chris is now an Associate Editor for the US-based journal Perspectives of New Music and guest edited an edition on Africa.

Liesl van der Merwe is a professor in the School of Music and MASARA at the North-West University, South Africa. Her research interests lie in the fields of music and well-being, positive psychology, music and spirituality, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, and lived musical experiences. Liesl supervises qualitative postgraduate music studies in the field of music education and also teaches research methodology, music education and bassoon. She has published articles in high-impact journals. Currently, Liesl is a National Research Foundation (NRF) rated researcher. She completed the research project: Social Cohesion Through Community Music Engagement in South African Higher Music Education. She was one of the volume editors of the Peter Lang book: Ritualised Belonging: Musicing and Spirituality in the South African Context. Liesl is on the steering and scientific committees of the Music, Spirituality and Wellbeing International Network (MSW) and was vice-chair of the scientific committee of The International Conference of Dalcroze Studies (ICDS) from 2021 till 2023.Liesl was one of the keynote speakers at the ICDS5 conference. She has also recently been invited, by the series editor, Prof Liora Bresler, to be on Springer's Editorial Board of the Landscapes: The Arts, Aesthetics, and Education book series, and she was the guest editor of a special edition on positive psychology and music education in the International Journal of Education and the Arts.

She also performs as a bassoonist in chamber music ensembles and is the conductor of the North-West Youth Orchestra.

Antoinette Olivier studied piano and singing at the University of the Witwatersrand. As an active performer she was engaged in professional performances and productions for Pact Opera, Salon Music, Brooklyn Theatre, Roodepoort Theatre and the Black Tie Ensemble. She appears on three of Salon Music’s CD’s and DVD, “Celebration”. Antoinette performed the world premiere of Hendrik Hofmeyr’s Song Cycle for Soprano and Orchestra (1999). In 1999 she became a founder member of the Black Tie Ensemble and since 2003 became involved in their incubator development program for young singers as singing and music theory lecturer (receiving a certificate for excellence as theory teacher by Unisa). Since 2003 Antoinette was a lecturer in singing at the University of Pretoria and at TUT. In 2009 she was a guest lecturer for the UP in Finland as part of an international exchange. She is still very active as a professional singer in all major cities in South Africa in recitals and with the Gauteng Philharmonic Orchestra.

Antoinette was appointed fulltime singing lecturer at the North-West University in Potchefstroom in 2012 where she obtained a Master’s degree in Music, cum laude, and have presented papers at international conferences. She is a recipient of numerous NWU research awards for excellence in music performance and for creative research outputs, as well as an award for teaching excellence. She has published in academic journals such as Koers and SAJCH. In collaboration with her colleagues of the voice department at the NWU School of Music, they were recently nominated by kykNet for a Fiësta award for the RSG Dis Opera production at the Aardklop and KKNK arts festivals which involved all the singing students. Furthermore, she has served as adjudicator on the Mimi Coertse voice competitions as well as on the DVD screening panel at the Unisa National and International voice competitions. She graduated in 2020 with a PhD in music at NWU. Antoinette believes in a healthy holistic development of young singers.
