Based on my intellectual property stemming from my Master's and doctoral studies, I could give scholarly leadership to enhance metacognition in mathematics education. Since 2010 I was involved in several research projects such as being the architect and project leader in a SANAD research project;  participating in the International Comparison of Mathematics Teachers Training project where I networked with academics from 12 countries - researching the affordances of lesson study in maths education; collaborating with both national and international scholars, e.g., Brock University Canada; University of Utrecht (SANPAD); Miami University, Ohio (Ann MacKenzie; Fulbright); University Khoi Kaen Thailand (Maittree Inprasitha); University of Massachusetts Lowell (Iman Chahine). I worked with the University of Plymouth in a community project in three primary schools (Mathematics Enhancement Programme South Africa). Currently, I am a co-investigator in two NRF-funded projects on the ‘Affordances of Indigenous Knowledge for Self-Directed Learning’ (with funding of R1 ,35 m), and ‘STEM teachers learning from I K holders’ (Ethno-mathematics) (with funding of R 1 ,07m) as well as ‘Teachers without borders creating Indigenous Knowledge Science Labs in Rural Schools (Fuchs Foundation) with prof. J de Beer. I designed Tshimologo Mathematics Shoestring Kit for teachers and learners. Through personal initiatives and subsequent projects and post graduate student supervision, I have contributed to a better understanding and recognition of metacognition in maths education in South Africa. Three students have graduated with doctoral and nine with masters’ degrees under my supervision. I was awarded title ‘Most productive supervisor’ of the 2015 HEMIS year at the faculty education sciences. My research niche found an epistemological home in the Research Focus Area Self-directed Learning.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-media field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Media</div> <div class="field--item"><p style="margin-left:108.0pt;"><a href="https://youtu.be/mYNGchS-C10">https://youtu.be/mYNGchS-C10</a></p> <p style="margin-left:108.0pt;"><a href="https://youtu.be/bkX3zbPssks">https://youtu.be/bkX3zbPssks</a></p> <p style="margin-left:108.0pt;"><a href="https://youtu.be/01qezHXsJSs">https://youtu.be/01qezHXsJSs</a></p> <p style="margin-left:108.0pt;"><a href="https://youtu.be/1kK0VIHw1Tw">https://youtu.be/1kK0VIHw1Tw</a></p> <p style="margin-left:108.0pt;"><a href="https://youtu.be/3Vm31PefdRE">https://youtu.be/3Vm31PefdRE</a></p> <p style="margin-left:36.0pt;"> </p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-physical-address field--type-text-long field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Physical Address</div> <div class="field--item"><p style="margin-left:144.0pt;">NWU Potchefstroom campus, Building B10, room 50</p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-telephone-number field--type-string field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Telephone Number</div> <div class="field--item">018 299 1854</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-cellphone field--type-string field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Cellphone Number</div> <div class="field--item">082 438 1140</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-e-mail-main field--type-email field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">E-mail</div> <div class="field--item">marthie.vanderwalt@nwu.ac.za</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item"> <img src="/sites/news.nwu.ac.za/files/files/experts/marthie-vanderwalt.png" width="300" height="448" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-photo-caption field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Marthie van der Walt</div> Wed, 31 Oct 2018 10:07:18 +0000 BELINDA BANTHAM 24324 at https://news.nwu.ac.za Martha Sophia van der Walt https://news.nwu.ac.za/experts/martha-sophia-van-der-walt <span>Martha Sophia van der Walt</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/57" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">PERTUNIA THULO</span></span> <span>Thu, 08/07/2014 - 11:41</span> <div class="field field--name-field-field-of-expertise field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1166" hreflang="en">Self-Directed Learning</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-person-s-title field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field--item">Prof</div> <div class="field field--name-field-job-title field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item">Research Professor</div> <div class="field field--name-field-name-surname field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Marthie</div> <div class="field field--name-field-surname field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Van der Walt </div> <div class="field field--name-field-other-experts-from field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Other experts from</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1208" hreflang="en">Faculty of Education</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p>Prof Marthie van der Walt completed both her MEd (2006) and PhD (2008) with Prof Kobus Maree (UP) as study leader/promoter. The Basic Mathematics questionnaire in Mathematics (Primary) (BM(P)) and the Mathematics Vocabulary questionnaire (Primary) (MV(P)) were designed supplementary to the Study Orientation questionnaire in Mathematics (Primary) (SOM(P)). Three instruments (i.e., the simple yet useable SOM(P), the BM(P) and the MV(P) ( or <em>TriMATHS</em>) that dispose of good psychometric characteristics and for use among grade 4 to 7 learners, were developed. <em>TriMATHS</em> is available in Afrikaans, English, Setswana and Portuguese (Jopie van Rooyen Partners Psychological test providers in Africa  <a href="mailto:info@jvrafrica.co.za">info@jvrafrica.co.za</a>)</p> <p>She regularly peer-reviews manuscripts for publishing in national and international journals, and has published various articles and chapters in books herself nationally and internationally.
