This research is done in order to determine soil pollution with the aim of making recommendation on how to address and manage these effects. In addition to this he also does research on organic waste management utilizing earthworms. Current research projects undertaken by him include assessing the effects of mining activities on the surrounding soil environment by using earthworms (Eisenia andrei) and potworms (Enchytraeus) as indicator species. At present his research grouping is the leading soil ecotoxicology group in South Africa and Africa. He was voted as Steering committee member (representing Academia from Africa) of the Global Soil Advisory Group by SETAC (Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry). The latter is an international “not-for-profit, global professional organization comprised of some 5,500 individual members and institutions from academia, business and government.” He’s also been appointed as regional convener for EIGSA (Earthworm Interest Group SA). He also was appointed as extraordinary professor at the University of Gävle (Sweden) 2009–2014 as part of the Linnaeus-Palme Programme. During 2015 he was invited as distinguished professor at the University of Central Lancashire (Preston, UK) under their distinguished visitor program.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-other-experts-in field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Other experts in</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1617" hreflang="en">Zoology</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-url-google-scholar field--type-link field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="https://scholar.google.co.za/citations?user=2sOQRuQAAAAJ&amp;hl=en&amp;oi=ao">Google Scholar</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-other-media field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Other Media</div> <div class="field--item"><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJ7v4ZSLjIM">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJ7v4ZSLjIM</a></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-telephone-number field--type-string field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Telephone Number</div> <div class="field--item">018 299 2501</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-e-mail-main field--type-email field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">E-mail</div> <div class="field--item">mark.maboeta@nwu.ac.za</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item"> <img src="/sites/news.nwu.ac.za/files/files/experts/mark_maboeta.jpg" width="190" height="286" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-photo-caption field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Prof. Mark Maboeta</div> Fri, 06 May 2016 06:32:56 +0000 Anonymous 21965 at https://news.nwu.ac.za Ché Weldon https://news.nwu.ac.za/experts/ch%25C3%25A9-weldon <span>Ché Weldon</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/57" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">PERTUNIA THULO</span></span> <span>Mon, 07/27/2015 - 15:13</span> <div class="field field--name-field-field-of-expertise field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1698" hreflang="en">Amphibian conservation and Disease epidemiology</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1184" hreflang="en">Zoology</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-person-s-title field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field--item">Prof</div> <div class="field field--name-field-job-title field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item">Associate Professor</div> <div class="field field--name-field-name-surname field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Ché</div> <div class="field field--name-field-surname field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Weldon</div> <div class="field field--name-field-other-experts-from field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Other experts from</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1244" hreflang="en">School of Biological Sciences</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p class="rtejustify">Amphibian conservation has received increasing attention following the 2005 global declaration of the Amphibian Conservation Action Plan (ACAP), with placed a high premium on amongst other increasing the capacity of conservation research required to combat this global crisis. It is within this research field of amphibian conservation that I have established my research activities within the geographical bounds of sub-Saharan Africa and adjacent island of Madagascar.</p> <p class="rtejustify">The majority of my work effort is focused, but not limited to the disease chytridiomycosis caused by a fungal skin pathogen <em>Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis </em>(<em>Bd</em>). Studying wildlife pathogens from the perspective of gaining insight on how to better conserve the host species being affected by disease requires trans-boundary collaboration between wildlife ecologists, veterinarians, and conservation organizations. For this reason my work on amphibian diseases has involved international collaboration on papers with authors from various European countries, the USA and elsewhere in Africa.</p> <p class="rtejustify">These papers resulted in integrated approaches to amphibian conservation strategy and trend setting discoveries on <em>Bd</em> genomics by combining expertise from various institutions such as international and regional NGOs, government departments, conservation agencies, natural history museums, zoos and universities. I advocate a holistic research approach to ensure sustainable conservation of amphibians especially with regards to the advancement of the knowledge base of <em>Bd,</em> one of the most eminent threats to amphibians worldwide. The following topics summarise the most important aspects of my research focus: 1) developing and promoting integrated conservation strategies for amphibians; 2) mapping and monitoring disease distribution; 3) scientific documentation of pathogen biology and ecology; 4) pathogen phylogenetics relating to origin, spread and virulence; 5) understanding the role of anthropogenic involvement in pathogen dissemination. At this stage of my career I am established as scientist in the field of amphibian diseases, with a focus on <em>Bd</em> in Africa and Madagascar. My research program on <em>Bd</em> is the only one of its kind based in Africa and is of international value since it contributes significantly to addressing issues around disease emergence and pathogenicity in various other countries around the globe.</p> <p> </p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-blog-or-website field--type-link field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Blog or Website</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?view_op=list_works&amp;hl=en&amp;user=lx2Yjh4AAAAJ">https://scholar.google.com/citations?view_op=list_works&amp;hl=en&amp;user=lx2Yjh4AAAAJ</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-url-google-scholar field--type-link field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="https://scholar.google.co.za/citations?user=lx2Yjh4AAAAJ&amp;hl=en&amp;oi=sra">Google Scholar</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-physical-address field--type-text-long field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Physical Address</div> <div class="field--item"><p>J.S. van der Merwe Building (E6)</p> <p>Potchefstroom Campus</p> <p>North-West University,</p> <p>11 Hoffman Street</p> <p>Potchefstroom</p> <p>2531</p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-telephone-number field--type-string field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Telephone Number</div> <div class="field--item">+27 (0)18 299 2375</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-fax field--type-string field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Fax</div> <div class="field--item">+27 (0)18 299 2503</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-e-mail-main field--type-email field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">E-mail</div> <div class="field--item">che.weldon@nwu.ac.za</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item"> <img src="/sites/news.nwu.ac.za/files/files/experts/Prof%20Che%20Weldon.jpg" width="307" height="380" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-photo-caption field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Prof Ché Weldon</div> Mon, 27 Jul 2015 13:13:27 +0000 PERTUNIA THULO 21119 at https://news.nwu.ac.za Louis Heyns du Preez https://news.nwu.ac.za/experts/louis-heyns-du-preez <span>Louis Heyns du Preez</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/57" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">PERTUNIA THULO</span></span> <span>Thu, 08/07/2014 - 12:35</span> <div class="field field--name-field-field-of-expertise field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1184" hreflang="en">Zoology</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-person-s-title field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field--item">Prof</div> <div class="field field--name-field-job-title field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item">Professor</div> <div class="field field--name-field-name-surname field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Louis Heyns</div> <div class="field field--name-field-surname field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Du Preez</div> <div class="field field--name-field-other-experts-from field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Other experts from</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1240" hreflang="en">Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p>Louis du Preez is a professor in Zoology at the North-West University.
