She acts as Subprogramme leader: Drug Delivery; Chairperson of the Scientific Committee: Drug Delivery; Head: Cosmeceutical Research; Manager: Transdermal and Topical Drug Delivery Laboratories; Head: Pharmacen™ Skin Studies Services, and Internal facilitator: PG Dip (Cosmetic Product Formulation).</p> <p>Prof Gerber is registered at the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC), she is an EXCO member of The South African Chapter of the Controlled Release Society (CRS) – representing Transdermal and Topical Drug Delivery in South Africa and the North-West University and a member of The Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa (PSSA); Society of Cosmetic Chemists South Africa (Coschem), Cosmetic, Toiletry &amp; Fragrance Association of South Africa (CTFA) and The Society for Advanced Cell Culture Modelling for Africa (SACCMA). She also serves on the Faculty Board and the Research and Innovation Committee of Health Sciences, NWU.</p> <p>Since 2006, she has mentored various postdoctoral fellows and postgraduate students (MSc and PhD). She is the author/co-author of numerous international publications and has presented her research at different scientific conferences, nationally and internationally. Prof Gerber regularly acts as reviewer for numerous internationally accredited journals and as external reviewer for grant proposals, nationally and internationally (i.e., Chile and France). She has received several research grants of which she was the principal investigator and completed a Sabbatical at the Division of Drug Delivery Technology, LACDR (Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research), Leiden University, The Netherlands under the guidance of Prof Joke Bouwstra in 2012.</p> <p>Prof Gerber focusses on the development of novel research technologies in transdermal and topical drug delivery coupled with dermal toxicity, wound healing, and nano-drug delivery vehicles (i.e., nano-emulsions, nanoparticles, nano-emulgels, vesicles, etc.) for the topical application of different actives (pharmaceutical or cosmeceutical) to enhance percutaneous absorption and to assess delivery into and through the skin. pharmacodynamics. I work interdisciplinary and integrate chemistry, molecular biology, biochemistry and molecular toxicology in my research. I am actively engaged in various areas of pharmaceutics including biochemical, cellular and whole-animal models, with a focus on infectious diseases and cancer. My specific strengths are in the understanding of the molecular and cellular determinants of formulations, the development of polymeric and lipid based nanoparticulate formulations and molecular mechanisms whereby ingredients exert their toxic effects on living organisms. After completion of my PhD, I commenced with a postdoctoral fellowship in the field of Pharmaceutics in the Unit for Drug Research and Development, now the Centre of Excellence for Pharmaceutical Sciences (Pharmacen™). Based on my extensive experience in culturing of mammalian cells and developing disease models, one of my objectives was to establish mammalian cell lines for in vitro investigations on drug absorption and biotransformation. Establishment of three-dimensional (3D) cell culture systems was identified as a strategic objective for Pharmacen™ to improve on current two-dimensional (2D) cell culture models for future research projects. I have a collaboration with the TCEL group at the University of Southern Denmark and CelVivo IVS in Denmark, and this collaboration provided us with in-depth knowledge regarding the culturing of clinostat-based rotating 3D spheroid cultures. I received the NRF research career advancement fellowship program award in 2014, which enabled me to establish a functional 3D spheroid cell culture system as a model for phytomedicine-drug interaction and toxicity studies. In 2016, I was also awarded an MRC self-initiated research grant to establish three-dimensional cell culture systems as models for multi-drug resistance in cancer. As postdoctoral fellow, my initial research concentrated on phytomedicine-drug interactions and pharmacokinetics, but this has been expanded by developing novel mammalian cell cultures, specifically cell culture models based on 3D spheroid technology. To date (2016), she has supervised 59 post-graduate students.  Prof Liebenberg is the inventor/co-inventor of several patents, the author/co-author of three book chapters and 71 papers in international, peer-reviewed journals.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong><em>Wilna Liebenberg, BPharm, MSc, DSc (NWU)</em></strong> is ‘n navorsingsprofessor in die Sentrum van Uitnemendheid vir Farmaseutiese Wetenskappe by die NWU.  Sy is die stigter en hoof van die <em>Solid-state Pharmaceutical Innovation and Nanotechnology </em>(SPIN) navorsingsgroep.  Haar navorsing fokus op farmaseutiese vaste-toestand chemie, polimorfisme en swak water oplosbare geneesmiddels. His research interests include nose-to-brain drug delivery, in vitro and ex vivo models to assess intranasal drug delivery, functional excipients, beneficial herb-drug interactions and biopharmaceutical aspects of natural compounds. He has published more than 100 articles in accredited, peer-reviewed scientific journals and supervised as well as co-supervised more than 20 PhD students and more than 70 MSc students. He holds a C2 rating from the NRF and has received research funding from the NRF and MRC. He has been invited to present plenary sessions at international conferences and received distinguished awards from the Academy of the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa. His most significant research output has been on the enhancement of the delivery of phytochemical compounds to reach both the systemic circulation and brain as targets. Phytochemicals from medicinal plants that have been shown pharmacologically active in the brain against depression, anxiety, migraine and cognitive disorders have been successfully delivered across excised nasal respiratory and olfactory epithelial membranes. Furthermore, he is involved in the development of advanced in vitro-ex vivo combination models to predict drug absorption into the brain after intranasal administration.</p> </div> <div class="field with interest in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and the profession of Pharmacy.  As an academic in the field of Pharmaceutical Chemistry I have experience in teaching-learning and research and as a Pharmacy Professional I have experience in general management, commercialisation and work-integrated teaching-learning.</p> <p class="rtejustify">As a member of the Executive Committee of the Academy for Pharmaceutical Sciences sector of the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa I have extensive knowledge of the interaction between the different sectors of the profession of Pharmacy, tertiary education, the Statutory Councils and other healthcare sectors.</p> <p class="rtejustify"><em>Teaching-Learning</em>:  I have twenty two years of experience in undergraduate teaching-learning as a lecturer and course/module co-ordinator for Pharmaceutical Chemistry.  I have valuable knowledge in the development of new programmes and the internal and external evaluation and approval processes involved.  I am involved as an external examiner in various courses/modules in Pharmaceutical Chemistry presented by Schools of Pharmacy at the University of Limpopo, the University of the Western
