Her research interests lie in the fields of music and well-being, positive psychology, music and spirituality, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, and lived musical experiences. Liesl supervises qualitative postgraduate music studies in the field of music education and also teaches research methodology, music education and bassoon. She has published articles in high-impact journals. Currently, Liesl is a National Research Foundation (NRF) rated researcher. She completed the research project: Social Cohesion Through Community Music Engagement in South African Higher Music Education. She was one of the volume editors of the Peter Lang book: Ritualised Belonging: Musicing and Spirituality in the South African Context. Liesl is on the steering and scientific committees of the Music, Spirituality and Wellbeing International Network (MSW) and was vice-chair of the scientific committee of The International Conference of Dalcroze Studies (ICDS) from 2021 till 2023.Liesl was one of the keynote speakers at the ICDS5 conference. She has also recently been invited, by the series editor, Prof Liora Bresler, to be on Springer's Editorial Board of the Landscapes: The Arts, Aesthetics, and Education book series, and she was the guest editor of a special edition on positive psychology and music education in the International Journal of Education and the Arts.</p> <p>She also performs as a bassoonist in chamber music ensembles and is the conductor of the North-West Youth Orchestra.</p> <p style="margin-top:8px; As an active performer she was engaged in professional performances and productions for Pact Opera, Salon Music, Brooklyn Theatre, Roodepoort Theatre and the Black Tie Ensemble. She appears on three of Salon Music’s CD’s and DVD, “Celebration”. Antoinette performed the world premiere of Hendrik Hofmeyr’s Song Cycle for Soprano and Orchestra (1999). In 1999 she became a founder member of the Black Tie Ensemble and since 2003 became involved in their incubator development program for young singers as singing and music theory lecturer (receiving a certificate for excellence as theory teacher by Unisa). Since 2003 Antoinette was a lecturer in singing at the University of Pretoria and at TUT. In 2009 she was a guest lecturer for the UP in Finland as part of an international exchange. She is still very active as a professional singer in all major cities in South Africa in recitals and with the Gauteng Philharmonic Orchestra.</p> <p>Antoinette was appointed fulltime singing lecturer at the North-West University in Potchefstroom in 2012 where she obtained a Master’s degree in Music, cum laude, and have presented papers at international conferences. She is a recipient of numerous NWU research awards for excellence in music performance and for creative research outputs, as well as an award for teaching excellence. She has published in academic journals such as Koers and SAJCH. In collaboration with her colleagues of the voice department at the NWU School of Music, they were recently nominated by kykNet for a Fiësta award for the RSG Dis Opera production at the Aardklop and KKNK arts festivals which involved all the singing students. Furthermore, she has served as adjudicator on the Mimi Coertse voice competitions as well as on the DVD screening panel at the Unisa National and International voice competitions. She graduated in 2020 with a PhD in music at NWU. Her focus was on ensemble music and piano accompaniment. In 2009, after postgraduate studies in Youngstown, USA, with Caroline Oltmanns, she received the ABRSM performance licentiate (solo piano) (LRSM) and the Unisa performance licentiate (two pianos) with distinction and was invited to participate in the Unisa bursary winner’s competition. She has been a member of Trio Joie de Vivre since 2018, and together they have performed at numerous festivals. She performs regularly as chamber musician and accompanist. She has worked at the NWU for the past ten years. First, as a lecturer in music education at the Faculty of Education, before joining the School of Music as senior lecturer in music theory in 2016.</p> <p>Her research focus is on Dalcroze Eurhythmics and music theory analysis. Her current research has been on the application of Dalcroze Eurhythmics in different settings (music ensembles, education on tertiary level, and the elderly). While a member of Cape Town Opera’s Vocal Ensemble, Prof Cupido was recruited by American soprano and Professor of Voice, Barbara Hill Moore, to further his studies at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. During his studies abroad he was awarded the Sue Johnson Prize for Best Male Opera Singer and he was a finalist in the National Opera Association Voice Competition and the Shreveport Opera Singer of the Year Competition. He was awarded many merit-based scholarships for international study including the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Bursary, The National Arts Council of South Africa Award, the Schollmeier Foundation Bursary, the Dean’s Camerata Opera Scholarship from the University of North Texas, and The Bruce Foote Foundation Bursary. He has performed roles in operas and oratorios and has sung in many recitals in South Africa, the United States and in Europe. He has also been published in peer-reviewed journals. His research mainly concerns singing pedagogy, visual art and music collaboration, and singers’ wellbeing. He is an Associate Professor at North-West University and his students have won major competitions and continue to perform in South Africa, Europe and America. He completed a M.Mus dissertation under the supervision of Deirdre Hansen (UCT) in 1985 on Venda musical bows and the xylophone, and a doctoral thesis on Venda guitar music in 1993 under the guidance of Andrew Tracey (Rhodes).</p> <p>Jaco joined the University of Venda as lecturer in 1986. He has been teaching musicology in the School of Music at North-West University in Potchefstroom since 1995. His essays on Venda musical culture appear in the Journal of Ethnomusicology, the Journal of African Music, the South African Journal of Musicology, the British Journal of Ethnomusicology, the Journal for Transdisciplinary Research in Southern Africa, the Journal of the Musical Arts in Africa, Literator, LitNet and the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.</p> <p>Jaco is dedicated towards developing a new music curriculum for South Africa. To this end he makes regular contributions towards The Talking Drum (PASMAE, in collaboration with the University of KwaZulu-Natal). Jaco currently specialises in the documentation and study of Venda musical arts of precolonial origin, and has edited three annotated collections of Venda ngano song stories, namely Venda lashu: Tshivenda songs, song stories and musical games (North-West University, 2004), The flamboyant rooster and other Tshivenda song stories (North-West University, 2007) and The girls in the baobab: Venda stories from the Limpopo Valley (2nd edition, North-West University, 2013).
