I would describe myself as a physical geographer with a detailed understanding of atmospheric sciences and geomorphology. However, I have a deep appreciation of human geography and its impact on the physical part of geography. The title of my MSc study was “Quantifying particulate emissions from domestic burning in the KwaDela Township, Mpumalanga”. The Human geography section included having to characterise solid fuel use in a residential area. BSc Honours in geography and environmental management modules included Earth observation and remote sensing, Air pollution, Applied GIS, Introduction to environmental management, Environmental management and Honours Project. My medium-term goal is to be an Environmental science doctor. I am pursuing my Doctoral degree at the North-West University with the proposed title: Characterising dust emissions in Southern Africa. I am a young career scientist who would like to stay in Academia and hopefully get a B or A NRF rating.

Frank is a German citizen and came to SA as part of the Excellence Programme of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina investigating waterborne uranium migration in mining areas of Germany, South Africa, Australia and Namibia.

As former head of the Rewatering Research Programme of the South African gold mining industry in the Far West Rand Winde is intimately familiar with mining-related environmental challenges. Winde and the Mine Water Re-Search Group he founded led a number of high-profile investigations into mining-related risks including the highly publicised study on AMD risks in central Johannesburg (‘Winde Report’), impacts of peat mining on water flow and quality, uranium contamination in the Wonderfonteinspruit and its impact on the water supply of Thlokwe, heading the international Specialist Task Team on remediation of radioactive mine legacy sites on behalf of the National Nuclear Regulator, and being appointed co-chief assessor for evaluating Phase VII of the International Hydrological Programme of UNESCO.

Since 2016 Winde chairs the IGU Commission of Water Sustainability. He is reviewer for over 30 ISI-listed scientific journals and frequently advises national and international science funding bodies as well as governmental departments, municipalities, industry as well as civil society on scientific issues.

The MWRG, in collaboration with the International Agency for Research on Cancer of the WHO and the HZDR in Germany, currently investigate effects of uranium exposure in gold mining areas of the Witwatersrand on the burden of disease in affected residents.

Jointly supported by the German and South African Academies of Science Winde, in 2017, organised an international conferences on the sustainable use of abandoned mines focussing on the innovative solutions. At this conference Winde and his team presented first results of a study supported by Eskom and Sibanye-Stillwater exploring the use of deep level mines for generating and storing energy.

Piketh obtained his Phd in Geography and Environmental studies at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in 2000. He was appointed as a full professor at North-West University in 2012 as Co-Chair of the Eskom Power Plant Institute (EPPEI) in the School of Geo and Spatial Science and as Director of this School in June of 2015. He is currently a NRF B-rated Scientist and a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa. Over the past decade he has led research in atmospheric science focussing on the understanding of air pollution emissions, transport, and impacts. His research has been conducted using surface monitoring stations, aircraft and the South African research ships, through which he has built a large network of international collaborators. Stuart has trained more than 40 post-graduate students in the field of atmospheric research and air pollution. Many of these students now hold prominent positions in both Government and the private sector.

Kobus van der Walt joined the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education as lecturer in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies in 1990. In 1993 he obtained a Ph.D. degree on the dispersion of asbestos fibres from disused tailings dumps into the environment, and was promoted to senior lecturer in Geography and Environmental studies in 1994. Subsequently, he completed further training in Environmental Law, Environmental Audit, Groundwater management, Hydrological Simulation, State of the Environment Reporting on the Internet and Project Management. He served as Chairman of Geography & Environmental Studies for several years, and has been the boarding house master of Excelsior men's hostel of the Potchefstroom Campus of the North West University from 1997 to 2005. In 2003 he was promoted to Associate Professor and in 2010 to Professor in the Philosophy of Natural Sciences and Technology.

Kobus specialises in environmental management, hydrology, integrated catchment management and geomorphology and is registered with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions as a Professional Natural Scientist (Environmental Science), as well as with NQA as Environmental Auditor. He has supervised 51 masters and 10 PhD students in his career thus far.

He has been author and co-author of more than 150 publications and reports, and acted as Guest Editor for several prestigious international scientific journals. He has made numerous presentations at academic conferences and is regularly invited as guest speaker at conventions and meetings. He also presents the weekly "Omgewingspraatjie" (Environmental talk) on the national Afrikaans radio station (RSG).

Kobus is married to Ina and they have three children, Lize, Sonja and Boeta.
