Jacques de Jongh is a development economist and holds a PhD in Economics. He is a senior lecturer in the School of Economic Sciences at the Vanderbijlpark campus where he lectures at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels. His teaching experience has extended across numerous fields including microeconomics, macroeconomics, fiscal and monetary policy, as well as research methodology in economics.

Jacques’ research focus is mainly grounded in the intricate dynamics of globalisation and its profound impact on economic, social, and political dimensions. He particularly delves into how the integration of countries shape their economic development landscapes, exploring its ramifications on a range of diverse areas. Amongst other these include aspects that relate to labour market outcomes, gender dynamics, industrialisation, and the key macroeconomic objectives of sub-Saharan African economies.

During the course of his academic career, he has authored over 30 research articles in international and local peer-reviewed publications. He also serves as critical reviewer for a number of accredited journals and publication houses. Above and beyond this, Jacques has been an active participant in the global academic discourse, where he has attended numerous conferences both internationally and locally, acting as, organising, and scientific committee member, session chair and delegate.

I am one of the first African researchers to explore Nation Branding (NB) in tourism. Nation branding [also referred to as place branding] is a niche multi-disciplinary field of study within conventional marketing management. It involves the evaluation and management, thereafter of the image, perception and positioning [awareness and reputation] of a country/place in the minds of multiple stakeholders, including tourists. To date, my research has contributed to niche areas of tourism, including how macro dimensions - such as perceptions of how a country is governed, the culture and heritage of a country, its competitive advantages, immigration regime and inherent perceptions of a country’s citizens – influence the travel behaviour of tourists [their preferences and travel intentions]. Moreover, my research focus on the COVID-19 pandemic as a contemporary dimension influencing travel behaviour has provided academics and tourism practitioners with critical insights into how crisis-induced perceived risk factors such as physical, psychological, social and financial risk have affected the psyche of tourists and constrain tourism demand. My completed research spans two inter-linked themes in tourism Nation Branding and its subsequent influence on tourists’ travel behaviour. Since 2017, I have completed three research projects and authored and co-authored over 20 published articles in local (25%) and international journals (75%).

Chris van Heerden is a professor in the School of Economics at the North-West University (Potchefstroom Campus). He lectures undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Risk Management (Finance).

Working primarily in the field of finance, he specialises in portfolio management. I believe that as researchers we are positioned to provide practitioners with enhanced tools to overcome any challenges currently faced in these industries. My research focuses on how theory can be used in practice and help practitioners in the financial sector to understand the behaviour of financial market participants and their risk profiles. With this research and my researcher partners have been collaborating with a private investment firm in South Africa to help perfect their investment client profile.

Therefore, my research is aimed at providing information to the industry that can be applied practically, by understanding the behaviour of market participants (behavioural finance) in the investment and banking industry. This area of research has also extended into the banking sector to better profile the behaviour of depositors and their behavioural finance biases. A more critical analysis has also been done on the demographic profile of bank customers relating to their banking behaviour. This will also enable banks to predict possible bank runs and minimize losses. Some of my research has also looked into how behavioural finance (herding behaviour of investors) on the stock market can lead to extreme volatility in a firms stock price and possible losses.

Over the years I have delivered more than 8 postgraduate students along with a recent PhD student. In my career, I have managed to publish more than 30 research articles in internationally recognised journals. Between 2020 and 2021 the last 2 years, I have published an average of eight articles per year in high quality, peer-reviewed journals to make my contribution to the field of banking and finance. Up to date I have an output of 17,23 in total research output.

I am a distinguished young female academic with a passion for quantitative analysis of socio-economic issues. I am energetic, persistent, self-motivated, dynamic and hard working. I have more than six years’ experience in the teaching of several modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate level including Introductory macro- and microeconomics, Monetary Economics at third-year level and Monetary and Fiscal Policy at honours level. I am also involved in research supervision at honours, masters and PhD level; having graduated several masters’ students. I have had the opportunity to work on several industry research projects, while having published numerous research articles in peer-reviewed national and international journals, and attended a number of academic/research conferences nationally and internationally. Sonja Grater is an associate professor in the School of Economics at the North-West University (Potchefstroom Campus). She lectures undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the field of international trade, and also gained practical experience in the freight forwarding industry before joining the University.

Prof Grater's research is mainly focused on trade in services and she has authored several publications in this field. She is particularly interested in the potential of the services trade within a South African context. She also heads up the TRADE-DSM® (Decision Support Model) sectoral research group. As part of her research, Prof Grater developed the Decision Support Model for the identification of South African export opportunities for services in particular. The results of the model can be used by government and businesses to develop and expand export markets for specific service sectors.

Prof Grater is also currently involved in research on global value chains (with a services focus), trade facilitation and FDI.
