A whole week of new music overload
NEW MUSIC WEEK
Saturday 2 to Friday 8 August 2014
NWU Conservatory, Potchefstroom
Following the New Music Week presented by the Odeion School of Music in Bloemfontein during 2013, the NWU School of Music will host another New Music Week at the Conservatory in Potchefstroom during the first week of August. This event is presented in collaboration with the Odeion School of Music (UFS) and the Wits School of Arts, with the support of the SAMRO Foundation.
The 27 activities during the New Music Week include several workshops on composition, conducting, and the combination of instruments and live electronics. Visiting composers Clare Loveday and Alfred Vorster will speak about their work, and pianist Mareli Stolp will lead a colloquium on new music and performance-based research. There will also be plenty of performances of contemporary music (including works by South African composers such as Stefans Grové, Hannes Taljaard and Chris van Rhyn) at the four lunch-hour and five evening concerts. Presenters and performers include Mario Zannoli and Augusto Arias (Argentina), Oliver Frick and Junko Yamamoto of ensemble cross.art (Germany), Duo Montagnard from the USA with Joe Murphy and Matthew Slotkin, Ensemble Trans.Z (Switzerland), Paul Richard and Mareli Stolp (South Africa), the OSM Camerata from Bloemfontein, and the New Music Ensemble, staff and students of the NWU School of Music.
Entry to all these events is totally free. A full schedule and further information on all the activities during the New Music Week can be viewed at www.nwu.ac.za/new-music-week-2014.
