Top of the log standing for NWU Vanderbijlpark soccer
The men’s soccer team of the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Vanderbijlpark is having a dream season. Not only is the team on the verge of being promoted to the SAFA Gauteng ABC Motsepe League for the 2018/2019 season, but the team is also currently on top of the log of the SAFA Sedibeng Regional League.
One of the team’s success factors is the mutual beneficial relationship with the Kaizer Chiefs Football Club. Six of the NWU’s registered players hail from the ranks of the Kaizer Chiefs development structures and also represented the Kaizer Chiefs MDC (MultiChoice Diski Challenge) team.
With eight matches remaining, the team from Vanderbijlpark only has to win five to qualify for the provincial play-offs where they will compete against teams from Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, Sedibeng, West Rand and Johannesburg. At the end of the play-offs, two teams will be promoted to the SAFA Gauteng ABC Motsepe League.

On 14 and 15 April 2018 the campus will be taking part in the inaugural Herold Ndlovu Top 16 Soccer Tournament to take place in Polokwane at the University of Limpopo. The tournament will serve as both a selection and preparation opportunity for the upcoming USSA Football Club Championships. The USSA tournament will take place from 2 to 7 July at the Nelson Mandela University and during the tournament the team from Vanderbijlpark will have the opportunity to qualify for the Varsity Football league for the first time ever.
